I try to run “clean machines†and take backups regularly. Last Friday we had severe gales, and there was a power outage during the night which was well beyond the capacity of my UPS to handle. In the morning, all the computers rebooted, except for one of my Quad 6600’s. BSOD, and a complete refusal to let me access my backups. My only recourse was to repartition/reformat/reload everything. I’ve run a full CHKDSK, and run Prime95 for 24hrs, no problems there. So I guess this is just to say sorry, guys, I’ve trashed four of your models. John Wales UK |

No worrys. And commiserations. Happened to me last year, but there was only one model involved. No matter what I tried, I couldn\'t get at the data on the disk, even as a second disk to a new install on a new main disk. Had a double \'brown out\' recently, and one of my quads rebooted. (Running beta models.) All seemed OK, until I went to upload some trickles, and then I found a problem; 2 of the models had re-wound from TS 97218 to TS 10802. They\'re still going OK, but 2 are now a day and a half behind the other 2. I read about the gales in the UK. Quite nasty. |

GW, at least you noticed, which doesn\'t always seem to be the case with a few members who blithely bash/crash/trash without posting to get advice. If any of the models were HADCMs they may yet be reissued for completion of just the missing part on another computer. I use an external hard drive for backups. Until now I\'ve just left it running all the time but after what you\'ve both said I think I\'ll turn it off and unplug it when it\'s not in use. Cpdn news |

Hi, John. Sorry to her about your troubles. Another way to safeguard your backups that cost less than having a second hard drive is keep that backups on a flash drive. Prices for these devices are dropping rapidly. The 2 to 4 GB drives are quite reasonable now. They will hold several back-ups. Jim I try to run “clean machines†and take backups regularly. Yes, external storage of backups is clearly the way forward. We have severe storms predicted for tonight, so in the meantime I think I will close everything down before I go to bed! Thanks to all for the advice. John. |
