I\'m putting together my first quad system (Intel Q9550 chip) and am wondering if the out-of-the-box fan-and-heatsink that comes with the chip will be sufficient to keep the CPU cool when it\'s crunching BOINC projects on all four cores, especially CPDN, in ambient temps of 65 to 75 F. On my existing dual-core Pentium D 920, when I\'m running CPDN on both cores the processor heats up to 127 F. when the ambient temp is 65 F. Running 62 degrees above ambient seems to be a constant with CPDN on this machine. With other BOINC projects, it is about a 57 F. degree rise above ambient. I think thermal max for this chip is 147 F. So, unless the room gets over 80 F., I don\'t have a problem with this machine overheating. My new QUAD will be in an identical enclosure case as my PD 920 - same fans and all. Can I expect sufficient cooling as with my PD 920 or am I going to have to make extra efforts? If anyone out there has some experience with quads and cooling and could let me know what to expect with 4-core 100% BOINC crunching, I would appreciate it. |

The \"Best\" place is over at SaH in NC where the rabid OC guys hang out. If needs be, attach and run a couple tasks so you can post ... There are constant discussion on the best fans and all the other details. You will get a lot more input over there ... |

On this project, things like this get discussed on the \"other\" forum, here, which has a much better editor, and also preview facilities. This thread on Quads, for instance. It\'s totally separate to these boards, and has to be signed up to separately to post. (Use the same name as here to make it easier to recognise you.) |
