Hey!

I have been running BOINC and CP for quite a while. I was just reading over wikipedia, and read that most people running CP are likely running the Transient Coupled Model, 1920-2080.

I, for one, am running a model which started at 1815, called hadsm3, which according to wiki is \'the original model\'.

My question now is, is this model still in use, am I running the right model?

Yes there are some new slabs being run. There are about 4 different model types right now, plus a couple in development. You can select which types you want to run in the CPDN project preferences.

The current HADSMs are for different research projects from the original models. The two you have on your computer have 3 phases each of 15 years. One of your models has already produced good graphs for Phase 1. You can find more recent information about the types of model by going to the READMEs in my signature and looking at the collection called Running the Model.

I\'ve looked at your models. Your previous models crashed with -107 errors. This can usually be avoided. In most cases it\'s a graphics-related error. You should update your graphics card driver; this is a free download from the web (similar to Windows updates). Doing this will probably solve the problem.

In the READMEs look at the collection called Crashes and Problems. Link #7 by Thyme Lawn explains how to update graphics drivers. It\'s also useful to look at link #6 by MikeMars who explains how to run climate models to completion.

Thanks for the explanation, it\'s good to know the models I\'m running are going to be worth something.

The reason my previous models crashed is (probably) because the entire computer has crashed a couple of times, not the BOINC/CP application itself. I have had some problems with malware, and used the \'reset\' button a couple of times, and after one of those times I noticed that the program restarted. Could that make sense?

Anyway, I also updated my drivers, though that OpenGL program didn\'t word at all, I just downloaded the drivers from the producer website.

Oh, one more question. I noticed here: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/apps.php that the current version of CPDN (HadSM3) is 6.07 for my Windows XP computer. Yet I\'m running version 5.06 according to the taskbar of the climate model running. What\'s up with that?

BOINC version 6 was released recently, and new models had to be created. (See the original post in this thread for lots of info, especially the links at the bottom.)
More info in the News and Announcements thread at the top of the Number crunching board.

These new models were finally released a couple of days ago.
The numbers you mentioned show for which version of BOINC they were created.
It\'s a minor matter that relates to the display of the graphics, and doesn\'t change the data returned to the project.

The HADSM 6.07 was just launched on the CPDN main project 3 days ago. You downloaded your model before that so you have the earlier version made for BOINC version 5. Scientifically they\'re exactly the same, so you can complete your current model and know that it will be used. All of the models can be run on both BOINC5 and BOINC6.

Pieter, it\'s not usually a good idea to use the BOINC Manager Reset button because it aborts all the running tasks from that project. Then you have to start a new model.

Anyway, let\'s hope the graphics card update will stop the -107 errors. It\'s a good idea to back up the contents of the BOINC folder regularly so that if the model does crash you can restore it and continue the same model.

Almost all of us have model crashes sometimes. Because the models are so long it\'s almost impossible to avoid every problem before they complete. I\'ve rescued some of my models by restoring a BOINC folder backup.

It\'s possible that Pieter is referring to the reset button on the computer.
Which will likely kill the model, as per all of the warnings constantly posted about NOT turning off a computer before exiting from BOINC.

Yes, I was referring to the computer-reset button. I know it\'s not a good idea (for many other reasons besides BOINC), but when you just can\'t click away the pop-ups fast enough, it\'s time to use that button. Thanks for all the answers!!
