This HadSM3 model was blown up by me testing a trial copy of Kaspersky Internet security 2009. It decided \"heuristically\" that it was a major threat and shut it down, even after I had manually placed it in a \"trusted\" state.

I\'ve been extremely frustrated by BitDefender\'s flaky internet security suite and decided to try Kaspersky only to find that it takes an inordinate amount of tweaking to get things to function correctly as it shuts down anything that it doesn\'t recognize. And to boot, any new projects that are downloaded are immediately placed in the \"untrusted\" state.

For people who have a lot of time to play around this is fine, but I don\'t have this luxury. Maintaining three systems already is more than enough work for me.

Can anyone recommend a well-rated, solid antivirus suite that plays well with BOINC?

I personally have had very good luck with AVG. I was going to also look at Panda.

I\'ve used AVG for years without problems.
And for years I\'ve heard about problems with Kaspersky. And in the last week, someone posted about problems with Panda. (Couldn\'t find a way to do exclusions, I think.) Not sure where this was, but either here, on our alternate board, or on BOINC/dev.

I\'m using the free version of AVG as av and anti-spyware protection and comodo pro (again free) as my firewall. Neither are giving any problems with the CPDN models.

AVG free or paid?

I used Panda Platinum Internet Security for a while several years ago it was an EXTREMELY bad product. I must have had to reinstall it a half a dozen times because it kept breaking itself, and their tech support was absolutely worthless. Maybe it\'s better now.

AVG seems to be the winner here.

I am using both Paid and Free versions. Both I like, but I am more happy with the paid. I was reviewing Panda on a recommendation from a couple of people who use them in their companies. Supposedly was a pretty good product and had some nice ratings. Of course this is all Windows.

AVG has gotten some great reviews for many years, then I heard about some glitches in the later 7 and early 8 versions. I am still running a middle 7 version, though it screams for me to upgrade all the time. I am updating Defs only for a bit, until I am more sure about 8.

I expect that all brands go througn some issues. I am still reviewing where to go. I have through the end of the year.

Two or three years ago UK consumer magazine Which? compared AVs and firewalls. AVG free edition scored as highly as Norton and McAfee. Windows XP firewall did just as well, but they gave it a low rating and didn\'t recommend it because it doesn\'t check outgoing traffic.

Could be slightly different now of course, and I don\'t think they tested the more unusual firewalls.

(They also recommended Avast.)

I´m runing Kaspersky AntiVirus 6.0 with updates since about 3 years without any trouble, exept, that they stopped now updating the viruslist. I would have to upgrade to version 7.0 for my W2KP OS. Ask the hotline for that. There are several adjustments possible and they answer soon.
