The MacOS Intel application is very inefficient, not really worthwhile and a waste of computing power. I suggest that you remove it until it can be made more efficient. It is only adding to Climate Change at the moment. |

Looking at your computer, and a couple of quad core Macs, you appear to be correct. The dropoff in speed between hadsm3 type models and hadam3p models is much more dramatic for Macs than any Linux or Windows PC that are comparable. I just sent an e-mail to the programmer, but am unsure when, or if, anything might be done. |

Until the 3P Mac Application can be improved, you could remove the Mac OS 3P application and the Mac's would be sent the other applications where they shine. There was a similar although less dramatic slowdown on Mac OS with the CM3 application when it was updated last year. Cheers, Billy |

The performance difference is expected and this is not so much a case of efficiency. The Intel mac compiler strictly enforces a high and aggressive level optimizations on science applications which has a negative impact on the app. There is no override for this behavior. As a result, we have to perform additional checks on the floating point calculations. This is not a waste of resources. This represents a the realistic throughput of the application the mac. |

If you are unable to improve the 3P application on the Mac, then all the more reason to remove it. It doesn't help Global Warming to have Mac computers using twice as much electricity to get the same results. And it doesn't help your project or the feelings of the Mac users. |
