I have just aborted an HADCM3 model I was running because it went back to 0 for the second time (my house did have a power cut but another HADCM3 model on the same PC was not affected). It appears that there are no more HADCM3 downloads so does anyone have a preference on what I should download next? I don\'t have a view on this...there may be a type of model that needs more crunching...

It\'s very good that you should ask, but the fact that the models are available means they need to be crunched. In some cases Oxford is picking up particular parameter value sets that got missed earlier (perhaps all the models in a workunit crashed or didn\'t complete) or they\'ve identified specific values that need further investigation.

So it\'s entirely up to you. The longest current models are HadSMMH and ¼ shorter are the 3-phase HadSM. With both types you have to avoid disturbing them in any way during the post-processing at the end of phases and until they\'ve completed a further checkpoint. They\'re best if processed by people who glance at the graphics every day or two and would see if by chance they\'ve developed into iceworlds and should be aborted. If you decide on one of these types you may want to look at Iain Inglis\'s Iceworld Appeal thread; we can only help with this if we frequently back up.

The HadAM3P are much shorter but involve big uploads and downloads.

You\'ve been contributing for quite a while and probably know all the model types, but if not now\'s the time to take a look at the unfamiliar.

Hi, Digby:

This is just personal preference, but, I like the AM3P’s. They are short and can be completed in only a few days. As someone who has run several CM’s and numerous SM3’s and SM3mh I like the zippyness of the AM3P. Its nice to see them progress at about 12% per day unlike the CM’s that crawled along on my machines at about 0.5% per day. Those really were a long haul.

That doesn’t mean I won’t try one of those 1200 year millennium models when they come out. I can be a glutton for punishment sometimes. :)
