On my Intel Core Duo iMac, the FAMOUS graphics are not working properly. I get a detailed revolving globe with night/day, but no clouds or anything about the climate. There are 2 boxes which look like they might contain data, but they are simply empty grey boxes. |

There are 5 Macs being used by the project people, so presumably the graphics on those machines work.

FAMOUS graphics problems are invariably related to the graphics device driver. The OpenGL library is also required, but that would normally be installed with the driver. "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer |

As I mentioned last month in a similar thread, the 6.11 graphics don't show at all in the screen saver, but run fine when invoked from the BOINC client. Not that I miss them, but their non-functionality, the low completion rate of the work units, and the fact that Macs produce different graphs from other computers caused me a major crisis of confidence in the software at the time Darwin 10.4.0 BOINC Manager 6.10.58 FAMOUS 6.11 |

... Macs produce different graphs from other computers caused me a major crisis of confidence in the software at the time ...As far as I am aware there is no suggestion that Macs produce systematically different results. Each combination of operating system and processor will produce different results. Computers within each combination of operating system and processor will usually agree with each other. If evidence does emerge of a systematic difference then I would expect the application to be withdrawn for that platform. A detailed investigation of machine variability in slab models was published and found machine variation to be equivalent to variations in initial conditions - i.e. no systematic bias. Luckily there is now a new type of regional model available as an alternative to the crash-prone FAMOUS. PS Your post is an interesting one because it confirms my prejudice that users will make judgments about the project based on all information available to them. Over the years I've therefore posted any amount of stuff about minor anomalies that, in my opinion, should be corrected. The project is not generously resourced, so they tend to concentrate on what they judge to be important, but there's no reason to think that users will agree with that. |

Can you check that the climate graphics are displaying on your Mac computers? As I said, I am getting a beautiful view of the earth, but no climate information. At first I thought that my graphics were working on the FAMOUS models. |

At first I thought that my graphics were working on the FAMOUS models. Billy, I can't get any work from CDPN at the moment, but have just got a FAMOUS 6.11 model from the CPDN Beta site, which offers the same 6.11 application but with a different set of parameters. The graphics display perfectly from the 'Show graphics' button but the screensaver shows only the default BOINC screensaver and not the CPDN-specific one. The screensaver works fine on other CPDN Beta models, such as HADCM3. So, I seem to get rather less than you, in that there isn't even an image of the world. I'll report the behaviour on the appropriate CPDN Beta thread. Thanks for pointing this out. Iain |
