I'm hiding the post from Reatha Shepherd, and pasting in a copy WITHOUT the email address. Don't want the spammers to get hold of it. :) Cannot get climateprediction.net screensaver to change modes. As instructed, when I press CTRL + T to get temperatures, for example, the screensaver just goes off. The graphics panel that says to use <Ctrl> key to change displays is obsolete. The new graphics don't say that, only the resurrected slab models from way back. To change to a different graph temporarily, use the Show graphics button. The h key gives a list of what's available. Permanent changes need to be made on your project Account page, in the 3rd set of preferences. Click Update preferences at the very bottom of the page, and then click the Update button in the Projects tab of the manager on your computer. Backups: Here |

If you have the screensaver enabled you cannot change the view because, as you say, as soon as you touch a key the screensaver disappears. This is normal for screensavers which can only be active while the computer is not in use. If you press a key the computer is then in use. But if in your Boinc manager Tasks tab you highlight the model and press the View graphics button you'll be able to keep the globe window open and play around with all the views and options. Most of us disable the screensaver and use the View graphics option instead when we want to see what the model's doing. Cpdn news |

This may mean 2 things: 1) You want to be able to use Control C to change graph type without interrupting the screen saver. This isn't possible; it was a function of a long gone version of BOINC, somewhere in the version 5 series. Version 6 has completely separate science app and graphics. This is so that, it there's a problem with the graphics and it crashes, it doesn't also crash the science app. And ALL current and future climate models only use the new version 6 strategy. So you can't use the screen saver this way. 2) You want the original type of graphic display, as used by all current climate models EXCEPT the Millennium (FAMOUS). Only possible if you don't run Millenium models. Backups: Here |

Is changing screensaver turn off computing? I guess not, but I want to be sure... |

No, they're two different things. You don't even have to HAVE a screen saver. A lot of us do it this way, because constantly recalculating the image for the screen saver takes up processor time that we'd rather use for crunching the models. I've set my screen to go to blank instead. Backups: Here |

I have been a member for years and I don't think the graphics controls were ever actually implemented. I think it was after thought that the techs started to make and never finished. |

This is a 2 year old thread, and the original posters are long gone. BOINC does have a Show graphics button. This has been there, and working, for many generations of BOINC. It's in the Tasks tab of the manager. Backups: Here |

This is a 2 year old thread, and the original posters are long gone. Yes I found it but its not usable its greyed out and not clickable. So if Permanent changes need to be made on your project Account page, in the 3rd set of preferences what changes need to be made to make the graphics usable? That information would help alot. |

Assuming that it's greyed out after you've first clicked on a running climate model, then it's a problem with your Windows / graphics card setup. I vaguely remember something about this, but not what, or how to fix it. Hopefully someone else will show up who does know. Otherwise, you'll have to ask about it on the BOINC/dev board. I know not likely to be the case with your set up but as graphics card is mainstream and driver new enough worth checking out. After clicking on the tasks, you do need to click on one of the individual tasks to highlight it before the show graphics button stops being greyed out. |

I've thought of 2 things it might be: The graphics driver(s). You've installed BOINC as a service. Backups: Here |

Remember to max out your RAM (>8Gb) and disable the swap file for maximum performance. |

Several of the more recent model types don't have graphic displays. You can see which by looking at the Server Status page in the blue menu to the left, 5 from the bottom. |
