I just uploaded cpdn to my World Community Grid BIONC Manager. When I returned to my Manager Window I saw an inactive task due in March. I thought it was another project I didn't have room to finish last month. Well, I aborted it, to make space. It is my first CPDN task, due in March 2012. I had just finished reading that the projects are long, three months etc. Anyone know how to reset the project? I don't see a reset option on the CPDN Tab.

I don't know about WCG's manager, but with the BOINC manager, the Reset project is in the first tab, called Projects.
And there's no need to do this anyway - you'll get another model when your manager has decided that it has time for it.

I had just finished reading that the projects are long, three months etc.

You're probably confusing BOINC deadline time with model completion time.
The BOINC value is a long way in the future so as to fool BOINC into NOT running in 'panic mode' with a mix of projects, which it would otherwise do.

The current models, hadam3p, can be completed in just under 100 hours on a fast computer running 24/7 and not having work from other projects.
With a mix of projects, this will take longer.

But your biggest problem, is that you don't have enough memory for these models.
You really need 750Megs per model, so a couple of gigs is the best way to avoid 'disk thrashing' with these huge climate models.

And another thing that I forgot to mention, is that there's NO deadline with cpdn - you can take a couple of years to finish a model if you like, and the data will still get accepted, and you'll still get credit.
Although by that time, the research with that model type may well have been completed and the science report(s) written. But the data will still be accepted and stored. :)

OK, Thanks for the imfo. I Reset the project after doing a search at the BOINC website in the wee hours last night. My concern is not for points, thats not why I am doing this. The points I view as a way to keep track of how much I am able to contribute.

I realise that my system is pretty basic, without alot of memory and processing ability. Your response left me with a new problem of the same variety. Am I taking on a test that I am not going to be able to return usable results for? You said I don't have the memory, but is that because of my Preference Settings or just my cheesy machine is completely unable to perform the computations? I'm hoping its the former because I thought I had found something I felt was worth straining my computor for.

Thanks Again

The PC itself has only 512 MB of RAM. The Regional models need to have about 300 MB for themselves so they don't constantly swap out to the hard drive. So running even one model on that system might be tricky since the OS needs some memory as well.

BOINC thinks your computer has two processors (Pentium 4 with hyperthreading). If it tries to get two regional climate models and run both, it either will not be able to, or will do so EXTREMELY slowly with constant hard drive thrashing.

Yeah. I checked my models' progress, way slow, maybe 18-22 months. Useless. How do I return the data without messing up the model? Hopefully it can be run on another machine. I'll stick to rescueing animals. :)

To 'return' a model, click the Abort button for each model.
But first you'll need to set the project to No new tasks in the Projects tab. Otherwise you'll get another data set very shortly.

After which you can detach from the project.

I don't understand why the Boinc system would think I have two processors. My operating system uses less than 25 percent of my processing memory, so it should have handled it, with my preference settings switching between the two (this and the WCG models I also run) active tasks. If this is a common error it should be sddressed. I read the imfo in the steps required to start this project and I saw nothing that referred to it.

Also, it would be helpful to have the READ ME section of the forum near the download to give a better indication of the complexity (not just size) of the tasks.

I wish I could have stuck with it, it is quite fasinating.

Good Luck
