i am new to this i download BOINC couple of hours back and have already done some work.I have some questions

1.I am right now doing work for enigma@home 3 tasks are running and another 6 are queued and i have added climateprediction project yet i have no tasks from climateprediction project yet even if i have opted to not take anymore tasks from enigma@home?

2.If there is a power outage on and if my computer shuts downs due to it what would be the outcome for the tasks being done at that moment?

Your computer may already have enough work from Enigma to not require more.
There are 2 types of climate model currently available:

1) Regional models (in 3 types: PNW, EU, & SAF), which, on a fast computer without other projects, take a bit over 4 days to complete
2) Coupled ocean models, (for the RAPIT project), which take a bit over 3 weeks to complete

These can be selected or unselected in your project preferences on your account page.

All of the programs used here have been written by the UK Met Office people for running on their supercomputers, and they don't like being interrupted at critical moments. So power failures can cause them to crash.
As can computer re-boots caused by Windows updates, anti virus updates, etc.

The only way around this is to have a backup from BEFORE the crash. (See my sig below for how).

The best place to post questions such as this is in the Number crunching section, where you'll find many threads about many different problems.
And at the very top of that section, is News and Announcements, where we post information that people need to know.

You can subscribe to that thread, and receive an email each time there's a new post. But only if you have email notification enabled for the project in your preferences.

Welcome to CPDN! (As we call ClimatePrediction.net.)

Just now the project has very little work available. That will probably change in a week or two. To see what is available, click the "Server Status" link in the blue column to the left of this web page. To change which kinds of work you get from CPDN, click on the "Your Account" link to the left, then on that page click on "climateprediction.net preferences".

CPDN work is much more demanding on computers than other BONC projects. Each work unit takes from ten days to six weeks to run, with your computer running 24/7. And because CPDN work is so demanding, overclocking your computer is not recommended, and cooling the computer is important.

Unfortunately the default settings that come with BOINC don't work very well with CPDN, so it's best to change them. To do this, change the BOINC Manager to Advanced view". Then go into the "Advanced" menu, select preferences, and change

"Use at most ... % of CPU time" to 100 percent.

If your computer gets too hot, change "On multiprocessor systems, use at most ... % of the processors" to 67 (to use two processors) or 34 (to use one).

On the "disk and memory usage" tab of the Preferences window, select "Leave applications in memory while suspended".

Also, virus scanners can cause problems. Change the settings on your virus scanner to ignore the Boinc data folder, which is probably in C:\Program Data.

Just so you know what to expect:

Because CPDN work takes so long to run, when you get some CPDN work, you may not get work from other projects until it finishes. Over the course of a year, everything should balance out, but day-to-day, it may seem like your computer is not in balance between the projects. Just let BOINC work things out, and everything will be fine at the end of a year.

Also, CPDN does not use BOINC's "pending credit" system. Credit is granted for every "trickle" returned. (A trickle is a fraction of the processing completed - for HadCM3N models, it is 2.5%). So don't worry about seeing your credits in the "pending credit" column - they've been granted.

To answer your second question, most times CPDN work will survive an unexpected shutdown. The work units save a "check point" every few minutes, and the work unit restarts from the saved check point. But sometimes this does not work, for instance, if the computer was saving the check point to disk at the time the power cut happens.

So the answer is, try to avoid unexpected shut-downs if possible.

EDIT: I see Les got in before me, as usual. Take his advice about backups, and do read the forums :)

EDIT 2: One final note, downloads from CPDN and uploads of finished work can be tens of megabytes - don't be surprised by this either.

thanks for the details both les and greg.I am at present working on UK MET OFFICE COUPLED MODEL FULL RESOLUTION OCEAN 6.07 its showing 407 hours remaining(phew) :)

PLEASE ANYONE HELP ME, HOW DO I START WITH RECEIVING FILES FOR CALCULATIONS? ALL MY BOINC MANAGER SAYS IS COMMUNICATION DIFFERED AND RE TIMES FOR ONE HOUR AND SAYS AGAIN COMMUNICATION DIFFERED....HOW DO I RECEIVE FILES TO CRUNCH I WANT TO PARTICIPATE AND HAVE A POWERFUL COMPUTER WITH PLENTY OF DOWN TIME FOR CALCULATIONS.

I'm sorry but there isn't any work available at present.
