I haven�t seen anything in this forum about this question. In about 6 weeks or so Windows 8 will be released. I like Win7 so much that I have stayed away from the public beta this time.

I was wondering if Boinc and CP will be compatible with the new OS? Surly, someone must have tried to run it using the public beta. How did it go?

No problems yet with CP, SETI, or Einstein@home. Just got my first work unit for CP with win 8 today. am at 5% with Full Resolution ocean 6.07

Nice to know, but, I have decided that I am going to let win8 pass and stay with "7". The computers that I am using don�t have any real touch features and that seems to be all that win8 really is. Very little for conventional computer users and everything for tablet users. I suppose that Microsoft sees itself being left behind as the IPAD takes over the market.

I wouldn't get windows 8 unless you need the app support and touch support. It has only annoyed me. If you like installing a second operating systems such as linux you will have a few problems. They lock down the boot sequence to licensed operating systems only. Unless you unlock it, but if you unlock that it messes with other things.
The search function is messy if you are looking for multiple files, and the start menu is gone as they are pushing you to use the start screen.
It isnt as handy as they claim.
But yes Boinc and CP are compatible with win 8.

Thanks for that info. I'm sure you're right in saying that unless we want touch features there's no need to update from Win 7. Win 7 still seems pretty new to me; I'm still learning my way around in it after having it for 18 months on this computer so I won't start from scratch again until I have to.

I must say I sometimes yearn for the way the Control Panel was displayed in XP and have often had a hard time finding things in it in Win 7.

Hi...If you like the older view of the control panel, in the Windows 7 control panel display there is a "View By" drop down in the top right corner...if you pick "small icon" view -- it looks a lot like the old Windows XP control panel. (OF course some of the icons have changed.....)

By the way, if you do upgrade to Windows 8 and have an older printer or scanner -- that's a problem as well. I recently bought a new Intel CORE I7 machine and when I figured out I'd have to change out my Canon i960 printers and Canon 8400F scanner, I decided to stick with Windows 7 because Canon isn't updating those drivers. (Planned obsolescence I guess).

I hadn't noticed the possibility of displaying the Control Panel that way, by icons, and it does make an improvement. For starters the alphabetical listing creates some order out of apparently random chaos. Thanks!

I'm sure it's a good idea to stick with the oldest printer that still works and will produce the sort of copies you need. I've come to the conclusion that the newer the printer the more expensive the ink.

I have found that the best way to buy a printer is to go online search the bargain ink dealers. Find a printer that is still available new, but, for which people sell reconditions ink cartridges. I am able to get reconditioned cartridges for $6 or $7 USD that sell for $30 new. And they work.
