On study a paper of climate-simulation with usage a neuronal network in climate-modelling i found in the conclusion, that the results of this experiment can help to set up better initial-vectors/parameters AND the new next generation Models HadGEM are based on these knowledges. Then i saw, that the MET-Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/modelling-systems/unified-model/climate-models)is already using these new Models. The IPCC 2007 is saw is based on HadGEM models. Now the question, when will arrive the next generation models the millions of Home-Computers in CPDN Network? Are the original HadAM/CM also run on "standard PCs" in scientific climate institutes with x86-cores?, whats about parallelism? And in comparison with real scienfitic computers, how more or less performant is the CPDN-network actually? thanks PS: in these Semester i visit a study course of Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf from PIK-Potsdam :-) Maybe i could ask him personal too, aboput the computers an models and CPDN. |

... that would be fun. Perhaps 64-bit needs to dominate before a PC port would pay. |

Also, someone in a research group running the hadgem models would need to be convinced that it is a good idea to start a sub-project at cpdn to run the models. Which would include paying for project time. And then would come months of testing on a beta site. So, not this year. And from the front page: Active Hosts 35,989 edit From a MetOffice page (3 March 2011 ): Development of the HadGEM3 family : a family of climate models which uses the NEMO ocean model and CICE sea-ice model components and includes configurations with significantly increased horizontal and vertical resolution. It is planned that climate configurations of the MetUM at all timescales will move to the HadGEM3 family over the next few years.Note the last sentence. Also, from another page, the PRECIS model, which is used by research groups in a lot of countries, is only for 32bit Linux. Could also apply to the hadgem3 model when it's released for use outside the MetOffice. |
