Golden bowerbirds' building prowess helps scientists monitor climate change, and alarm bells are ringing

Professor Stephen Williams, from the College of Science and Engineering at Townsville's James Cook University, said the golden bowerbird lived in the highland rainforests of north-east Queensland.

For many years, he has been monitoring the bowerbirds, as well as other Australian highland rainforest species that are restricted to small, high-altitude areas.

"They've adapted to wet, tropical mountain tops. As the temperature increases it pushes them up the mountain and they really have nowhere to go," he said.

"The golden bowerbird is a classic example of that. It typically only occurs on mountain tops above 900 metres of elevation. The mountains are not very high here, so it has really got nowhere to go."


In 2005, a climate change conference in the United Kingdom was told that even a 1-degree-Celsius temperature rise would put birds like the Australian golden bowerbird under pressure.

Professor Williams said climate change predictions made more than a decade ago were now becoming a reality.

Climate change: Marine heatwaves kill coral instantly

Increasingly frequent marine heatwaves can lead to the almost instant death of corals, scientists working on the Great Barrier Reef have found.

These episodes of unusually high water temperatures are - like heatwaves on land - associated with climate change.

Scientists studying coral after a heat event discovered that extreme temperature rises decayed reefs much more rapidly than previously thought.

Mourners gather in Iceland on Sunday to commemorate the loss of Okjokull, which has died at the age of about 700.

After opening remarks by Ms Jakobsdottir, mourners will walk up the volcano northeast of the capital Reykjavik to lay a plaque which carries a letter to the future.

"Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier," it reads.

Current CO2 lebels about 400parts per million (ppm), current SF6 levels about 10 parts per trillion (ppt). That makes it about 1/40,000,000 of the current CO2 level. Not a huge worry IMHO.

The problems probably lie in the decay rate, and in how it interacts with "everything".

e.g. CO2 is being absorbed by the oceans, making them slightly more acidic. This in turn makes it harder for shellfish / crustaceans to grow their shells, which will / is decreasing their numbers.

It also persists in the atmosphere for a long time, warming the Earth for at least 1,000 years.

It looks like this could be a long term problem unless/until we find a viable alternative for the very high voltage stuff.

Apparently we're already being asked to reduce gas .
