I downloaded and installed BOINC and added the climateprediction.net project several days ago, but BOINC's event log has consistently reported that the "Project has no tasks available". The server status page also shows that no tasks are ready to send. Is it true, as it seems, that this project already has all of the computing resources it needs? |

No new work is available at the moment. Re-issued work, much of it failed on dodgy computers, a small percent from parameters which cause impossible climates (an important aspect of the research), is available on 'luck of the draw' basis. More tasks are in the pipeline, timing unknown. N.B. This topic is widely discussed on the boards... Regarding resources: About 20,000 computers "attached" but not necessarily currently set for work from this project, and work (when available), in batches of 5,000 - 10,000. News and Announcements thread at the top of this section of the board is the reccomended place to watch for announcements of all types. |

N.B. This topic is widely discussed on the boards... I saw something similar mentioned in a post created Sept. 19 ("Vanishing WUs", http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=7671#47123), but that's all I saw. I haven't checked the other boards. "Number Crunching" seemed vague enough to encompass my topic. |

Regarding resources: Believe me, I checked that. The last news was more than a month old. |

That's because, at the moment, there IS no news of new work becoming available. |

with all the strange weather that the north of our world has had this year. i would have though that all of the people responsible for weather would have been downloading absolutely tons of stuff to have sorted out, but it seems as if I am wrong seeing as there is no work units to be had for love or money. it seems that the participants of this seem to care more for this subject than those actually responsible for it. |

I suspect Bob that there is a time lag between the weather and the scientists providing the work for the programmers at Oxford. This will be followed by anther lag to get it turned into tasks for our computers. I also suspect that the programmers at Oxford are still working on the upgrade of the server side BOINC as I have seen no announcement telling me it is finished. This should mean a lot less problems caused by the non standard code freeing up more time for work as opposed to trouble shooting later but may be partly responsible for lack of tasks at present. I am not sure quite who you mean when you talk about those responsible for weather unless you are referring to those responsible for pumping vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere? If some of these projects had the funding they wanted we would probably be swamped with work units and tasks. |

Bob has put into words the thoughts I have had for some time now. As a climate change sceptic, I can only surmise that those responsible for this project must be climate change deniers, since they do not appear to be too bothered about harnessing the efforts of the thousands of volunteers prepared to give of their time and resources to further man's knowledge of his future on this planet. To put the blame for the slow generation of models for processing on problems with servers and the like really is taking the biscuit - does no-one know how computers work? |

I would add that any attempts, either financial or otherwise, that the West has taken, or may in the future take in order to reduce the man-made generation of CO2, will be more than offset by the "right" to progress civilisation in both the East and the developing world. If AGW is happening, then we'd better get used to it, because there is no way we're going to stop it. |

because there is no way we're going to stop it. I suspect you are right. I am old enough that I am unlikely to see the full effects of it unlike future generations. If you look at more details of the project both on these forums and on the project pages you will see that scientists from various groups around the world supply the work for the Project in Oxford to distribute. If you look at the posts of those involved in the project, I think you will find that they are convinced of the reality of AGW though how much and how fast is still open to question in my mind and probably theirs as well. |

Topical investigations are being considered and tested at the moment. If those tests prove fruitful then there may well be new work to do. 2. The introduction of regional models is a sign of that topicality (i.e. impact assessment), but it does seem to have been difficult to establish international collaborations with sufficient resources. For example, the Australia/New-Zealand model has been stalled for ages. The CPDN 'resource' is indeed under-used and it is odd that, having built a community, it should be left idle - but speculating about the reasons why that might be so is difficult given the opaqueness of the project. As a climate-change sceptic, of course, for you the wind in the grass is always a tiger ... |

For example, the Australia/New-Zealand model has been stalled for ages. Oz has had some of the worst bush fires in history recently, however they have a prime minister who does not believe in AGW. Not surprising funds for research are not forthcoming. Not surprising but very sad. |

No, it wasn't rhetorical, and I'm afraid your final sentence has gone right over my head. |

We have the same problem in the U.S. The climate deniers in the Congress are so strong, and so well funded by the big energy companies, that it doesnt look like anything will be done to curb Americas CO2 emissions in the foreseeable future. |

I just downloaded 5 WUs and 4 are now running successfully. NO download errors. The only quibble is that unless these are somehow shorter than previous hadam3p_eu models that estimated time to completion of only 78 hours is a bit short for that machine. 100 hour is more likely. This will probably self correct after first WUs finish. |

9 downloaded OK, 3 running. Completion times est at 71hrs. We'll see! |
