I do not understand why I am not permitted to create a Profile and tell fellow users who I am. According to my account, I have a credit of 1,657,849 yet I am told that in order to prevent spam I need a credit of 5 or more. This is a good way of turning users away from your project. It cost me a lot of electricity costs to get those credits.

The minimum of 5 refers to RAC. If it's too low, then you may be a spammer, of whom we've had quite a few before measures were taken.

How does an RAC of 5 determines that you are not a spammer. It seems to me that it is project greed to ensure that you keep crunching for you. Other Projects do not seem to have this problem. I doubt I will come back so that I can create a profile. I thought that all users are registered in the first place. Would they Spam? or is it your interpretation what spam is that seems to cause this problem.

The situation is what it is.
I didn't make the rules, I'm just reporting them. (Actually, I may have made suggestions about it, or it may have been one of the other moderators. 6-7 years is too far back to remember.)

I do remember there were a lot that were for drugs of various types and sources. It was about the time that both this board and the defunct php board were becoming infested by ads from a Canadian spammer. I was involved in finding them and helping to get rid of them, and the ones that I saw were for people that had zero credits, but lots of "sign-ups". Page after page of them. Hence the "minimum RAC" rule.

Have you looked through the profiles of these other projects to see what each contains?

You don't appear to have been crunching for this project for some time, so it's hard to get interested in your problem about wanting to publicize yourself here.

Yeah I do remember that the profiles were infested with drug adverts. I seem to recall that the minimum-RAC requirement was introduced by Boinc quite a long time ago (& seems like a reasonable compromise). The SETI forums didn't even allow you to post until you had RAC.

I'm a volunteer and my views are my own.

It seems to me that 5 is not a lot to ask for RAC. With an RAC of only 5 it would be a long time to complete the full resolution ocean models which would I suspect end up getting re-issued to other crunchers. If someone wants to have their presence advertised to others, it seems reasonable to me that they should do some useful work for the project in return. The fact there have been few of the regional models around recently means that in order to do useful work a cruncher does need either a fast computer or to be crunching a minimum of I would guess 8 or more hours a day. But then I am not a crunching tart spreading my boxes over tens of projects :P

A rule that would allow Cruncher_Pete (who currently has 1,657,849 credits) to create a profile would be "RAC > X or credits > Y". With intermittent model availability at the moment a well-intentioned returning participant might well have a RAC of zero.

However, not in our gift, sorry to say ...

The SETI forums didn't even allow you to post until you had RAC.

The SETI forums still have a minimum RAC requirement on the sections most likely to attract spammers (Number Crunching and the Cafe), but not on the 'Questions and answers' sections (Platform Specific and Getting Started) which might be needed by first-time or returning users finding it hard to establish a RAC.
