Message 48048 - Posted: 25 Jan 2014, 18:48:18 UTC

After a few years absence I've restarted a climateprediction.net BOINC project.

However, it won't DL any tasks ... it's always in "Communications deferred" status (a 1:00:xx delay).

Are there any settings that could be affecting this?

The budgets I've set:
2000 kB / sec DL / 100 kB/sec UL
400 MB / day

I've got 2 other projects running (SETI and EINSTEIN).

Each has a 100 share (eg: 33.33% each)

4 core i7, 24 GB RAM, OS X 10.9,
Boinc Manager 7.2.33

Thx

Hello Alan and welcome to the forum.

At the moment there are no tasks available for download. Keep an eye on the Server status page (to which there's a link in the menu on the left side of this page) to see what there is.

A few isolated tasks are being made available if they've crashed on another computer. Don't spend time on these if the workunit they belong to is marked No resubmission and the workunit number is hadcm3n7.... as they're defective. They have to be aborted.

It's also a good idea to keep on the forum News thread which is at the top of the Number Crunching section. You can subscribe to it and receive an email to alert you to new posts made there. That way you'll know what's going on.

Hello Alan

The "deferred" message is about a process started a couple of years ago, to limit the amount of work that can be downloaded and hoarded. Every time the server is contacted for any reason, a one hour timer is started. Constant clicking of the Update button resets this back to 1 hour.

You should also have a few lines to the effect that there are no tasks available.
You can also see this from the Server Status page in the blue menu to the left of here, 5 from the bottom.

There's been no work for close on 2 months now, and probably won't be any for a while yet.
The site has been undergoing a major overhaul, upgrading the software onto a new server, etc.

The place where messages will start to appear when we restart will be News and Announcements at the top of Number crunching. If you Subscribe to that thread, you'll get an email message when ever anything important happens.

edit
OK, I'm typing too slowly again. :)

Thanks mo.v and Les.

No tasks! Oh the processor cycles lost!

All those cycles dont have to be lost. There are other projects that you can run until such time as the Gods of Climate, at the place were the Oxen cross the river, smile on us again.

I agree fully with Jim. If you look at the Tools menu in Boinc Manager and click on 'Add project' you can mouse over projects in the list, see what they do, and choose the research you think is most worthwhile. There are more Boinc projects than the ones that appear there, but these are selected by the Boinc programmers in Berkeley as being safe and secure.

If you set a fairly short work buffer eg 1 day for extra projects it means that when CPDN jobs appear again you can set the other projects to No new tasks and then increase the work buffer. That should maximise your chances of getting what you want.

There is another climate project, but in beta testing, and it also does not have work all of the time, but it is http://climateathome.com/climateathome/index.php

For the last couple of weeks, CPDN has stopped accepting my uploads. It keeps sending me new work units, but with all the uploads waiting, I am running out of disk space. What is happening?

Can you copy and paste the messages in the message log when the file uploads fail into a post here?

In boinc manager, in the Projects tab, click on climateprediction.net and click on the Properties button the the left. Does the first line have https or http in it?

Yes. It looks like you are having the same problem the one that mmonnin linked to. I was wondering if it was the https problem, but it's just the one associated with the server being full for that type of model. I hope they free up some space soon.

Enough data was cleared over the weekend to restart the uploads on Monday.
There's a post here from David Wallom in the Upload failures thread about it.

Unfortunately, as often happens, this has become buried by people complaining about their personal problems in uploading.

And it's going to take days to get all of the data back from people's computers, because of the shear amount of it.

Just keep trying, and watch/post in, the other thread.

Hello, I just started getting involved with BOINC projects last week and have been unable to download a single task from climateprediction.net. I am also getting an unlimited number of "communication deferred" errors even though there are apparently tasks ready to send according to the server status page. Any ideas?

That "53 Tasks ready to send" is a BOINC anomaly.

Look at the bottom right section, where you'll see that there aren't any tasks to send.
This happens with the project now and then.

More work will be available "in the future".

Hello,

I have been unable to pull any tasks for sometime now. I have attached a new account and am still having the same problem. I've checked the server status(s) and there appears to be work available.

BOINC is just cycling around "Communication deferred: XXXX"

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

EDIT: I think I have found my answer in a different post, apparently there is only work available for LINUX machines?

kind regards,

Dan
