Bit surprised no one has asked for this here before but a quick search didn't turn anything up.

With the current situation the ability to highlight a particular zip file and suspend upload attempts till the _13 zips are being accepted onto the server again would stop attempts being made to upload them while those numbered between 1&12 could all still be sent.

Just to be clear, my wish would be for BOINC to have a suspend button that could be used from the transfers tab.

Hi Dave

This was asked for, and rejected, 3-4 years ago.
Discussion was probably on the old php board.

Thanks Les, that makes sense though given some of the things that do get asked for I am still a bit surprised that there haven't been repeated requests for it here.

The BOINC user experience should not be complicated by the addition of manual facilities which would enable a few users to work around the inability of a project to provide reliable infrastructure. That kind of accommodation will tend to excuse projects from their very obvious responsibility to their users and to BOINC to plan and deliver an adequate service.

BOINC does provide a number of facilities that don't require user intervention, including upload retries, backoff periods etc. Perhaps an acceptable solution might be to include in the backoff period calculation an upload-size penalty. The backoffs already include a number-of-tries penalty, but in my case only after repeated futile ~200 MB uploads to shift a few 6 MB zips.

Your idea would certainly help Ian. What I don't know as I so rarely run other projects is how many other projects have problems with servers being down preventing uploads? Most of the others I have looked at have relatively tight deadlines which are imposed unlike the CPDN ones. That would mean most work completed while the servers were out would be lost anyway if they were out for anything like as long as those for CPDN have been recently.

It is good to have a response as to why what seems like a good idea to me might not be so clever after all! I will continue to suggest anything that occurs to me though as I will hopefully learn something even if my ideas don't go anywhere.

Need smaller units of data! My computer is saying 390 hours left, which is not accurate! 2. I'm running seti as well! Which has smaller units. I have a estimated return of data date of 8/27 what day is it?

There's no "dead line". That's a BOINC thing, and isn't used here.
All data will be accepted back for years if necessary. Although by then it may be obsolete.

smaller units of data would greatly increase the amount of traffic generated by CPDN.

Some of the latest units are very short in comparison with those we used to get. Also because of the number of computers that crash models, splitting them up into smaller tasks would increase this problem.

The Short models released recently complete in 63 hours on my machine and I would guess in under 40 on a fast box.

Upload problems are discussed in the Number crunching section.
At the moment, discussion is here.
