World Community Grid are getting into climate research and they promise "up to 100,000 years of computing time". How much is that when compared to what we are doing here at CPDN?

Well, WCG is trying to get into the game but one wonders what sort of climate modeling they will be able to do with 12-hour tasks (18 hours in an extension for Clean Energy project).

My CPDN account claims equivalence, for me, "HadSM3 Model-Years 244,833.32". (Could that be ~2.5 times WCG's expected contribution? Hardly seems worth WCG's effort!) I have no idea of an equivalence between those numbers and what WCG claims but it doesn't appear all that promising for their effort.

[EDIT: Projects Stats, sixth from bottom on the left, used to show CPDN's computed years. Unfortunately, that is another statistic currently unavailable.]

CPDN staff is aware of WCG's effort, since shortly after WCG's announcement.

I'm sure WCG are referring to CPU time rather than modelled time.

Looks like the WCG have dropped the climate research. I can find no such information on their site. Maybe it got too hot?

WCG is usually quiet about (potential) future projects. The news-post http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=375 was only a call for researchers to get in touch with worldcommunitygrid, whether anyone has actually done so is therefore unknown.

The "submit a proposal" page now has the following:
Special consideration will be given to proposals addressing climate change, such as:
Climate and meteorology: climate modeling, severe weather warning
Climate change adaptation: sea level modeling, improving crop or livestock yields and resilience, watershed modeling
Climate change mitigation: renewable energy modeling, renewable energy materials research

The 100 000 years of computing time numbers seems to have been selected more-or-less by random: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=464994
