I certainly didn't make any changes to the BOINC settings, or any hardware changes to the laptop, so I was surprised to find that my Vista laptop was suddenly showing up as a "new" laptop (ID: 1372069), albeit with the same name as the "old" one. Currently running tasks had vanished, and it was now running SETI as well as CPDN. (It had been set to "no new tasks" for SETI for at least six months. I only ever activate SETI when there are problems with CPDN and I can't get any new CPDN tasks.) The only active thing I did around then was fiddle with the power settings, as it had decided to put itself to sleep at regular intervals, even though I had told it never to do this. (It's supposed to crunch CPDN tasks 24/7.)

I'm a bit baffled by this. Has anybody else seen this behaviour? (I merged computers by name, so I don't know what the old ID was, but the name is "BRIAN-LAP". Just my scientific curiosity kicking in. :-)

Did you attach it to a new project ?
Most common reason is attaching to a new project and the system in question gets issued a new CPID. Simply merge the computers, as you did, and all your stats will line up with the new CPID.
It could also be that for some reason it got reconnected to seti and that caused it to get a new CPID because it had been away for so long.
