The scripts run in the early hours of the evening, UK time. |

Credits are only granted when the daily script is run and appears to be working fine to me. The last of the 5 HadAM3P EU tasks downloaded to my i5 a couple of weeks ago started running a couple of days ago and has been receiving credits for its trickles (hadam3p_eu_fb17_2014_0_010389523_0). Looking at the task list for your computer it completed 2 tasks on 23rd November and has had no CPDN work (other than a couple of probable ghost tasks from June and July) until 4 WAH2 tasks were downloaded at 19:07:08 UTC yesterday. The first trickle from those tasks was returned at 15:33:40 UTC today and should be credited overnight. I was looking at my (diminishing) daily average credit and wondering why that was not being added to the total. I can now see what I had forgotten - that Trickles are the key. Thanks for the reminder. I hope this not a sign that senility has started! |

The credit scripts seem to be running in the middle of the day/early afternoon UK time now. |

Hello I'd like to be nice, but I'm really furious, CPDN has "given" me -51 850 credits. http://statseb.boinc-af.org/synthese_membre.py?cpid=a936af90dca4247530babef1338fec62 That's a waste of CPU and GPU that I should have dedicated to some other useful Boinc projects. Therefore, I don't want my computers to work any more for climateprediction, you must delete my accounts here, first is [AF>France>Astro]DonPanic with contact@donpanic.cool emailbox, second is nonononotme with nonononotme@laposte.net as emailbox. Let me know that you have done that by mail at contact@donpanic.cool. On my side, I'm going to delete the CPDN WU in my Boinc Manager. DonPanic |

If you were to look at the News and Announcements thread, I made a post about this a few hours ago. We've been telling people for years to subscribe to that thread. Also, this project works completely differently to all others in regards to credit. It's based on trickle_up files that are sent back to the project, and once per day everything is recalculated based on these trickles. I'll ask the project people to completely remove you from the project. That may take a few days, because both of them are up to their eyebrows at present with real work. |

I'm personally sad to see this project lose a valued cruncher. I myself noticed a -29,874 listed and came to these forums for an answer, which I found in the News and Announcements thread. As a zealous volunteer of CPU idle time since May 5, 1999 I won't be cancelling any projects work sent to me unless there is a serious bug in the work units which keeps failing. |

I continue to crunch for the Old Weather team knowing that I will get the "lost" credits back soon. Re Les Bayliss: "the credits won't be back until about Wednesday" http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=8096&nowrap=true#53634 |

Excuse the hijacking of this thread. Since everything came back up again, I am unable to post new threads though adding to existing threads seems fine. After I click on OK to post a new thread I get, Unable to handle request missing or bad parameter: id; supplied: Andy suggested clearing my browser cache and restarting browser but this has made no difference, I even tried using Konqueror - a browser that had never before been to this site and Wine IE with the same result. I also tried via my laptop as opposed to this machine. All I have yet to try is my partner's windows lap top. I would be interested to know if anyone else can replicate the problem or not as that may give me some clues as to where to look next. Edit: There is no urgent need for me to post a new thread as the news from those working on getting things back to normal has now been posted by Les. Thanks |

Dave, I just tried creating new thread (in the Number crunching board) and I see the same thing: Unable to handle request (Windows 7 and Firefox 45.0) |

Thanks Randi, I will let Andy know that I am not the only one and not bother with the windows laptop idea. I suspect that it may be the new post thing is only working at the moment for moderators. Dave |

Up to now, I've only suspended CPDN workunits. I can still connect to my account. Maybe I can wait until credits attritutions are back in order to relaunch. You know, it's really stressing to feel punished for having crunched for climate research, although I wonder if letting computers on 24/24 hours is climatically correct, even if in France it's almost all nuclear electricity produced 24/24 hours. |

Just to clarify, as a moderator, I am also unable to create a new thread on anything. |

Thanks, Andy has had all the information except that last bit. I think we have now proved it is at the CPDN end of things so I will be patient. |

Up to now, I've only suspended CPDN workunits. I can still connect to my account. The credits will come back at some point, so there's no punishment intended. As well as the source of electricity, there are a number of other factors that you might consider: 1. The models have scientific value, which justifies the expenditure of energy to some extent. "You have to spend a dollar to make a dollar." 2. The project itself only asks volunteers to run models in the background, so the additional energy expenditure is the "marginal" increase in electricity consumed and not the entire energy consumption of a PC that the user chooses to leave on 24/7. 3. Some users in relatively cold countries run more models in winter than summer, thereby providing a heating effect in winter and avoiding a cooling requirement in summer. 4. In the absence of CPDN, some equivalent models would be run by academic institutions on conventional computers, most likely consuming energy at such a rate that wasteful cooling is necessary. When these and possibly other factors are taken into account, most people conclude that volunteer computing for climate simulation is acceptable from an environmental point of view. Better than playing a computer game ... |

I think Les that you need to remember that we are all volunteers who subscribe to this because we believe that the cause is worthwhile. I have had a -100000 plus reduction in work done so could well feel aggrieved but won't if it is restored. If it is not then I will certainly NOT continue to with this project. I, for one, frankly, have better things to do with my time than to follow all of the threads on the projects to which I subscribe and, I suspect that, the majority of others are the same. Your comment re "real work" is totally out of order. Perhaps you need to be a lot less antagonistic. |

Ian My reminder about the News and Announcements thread was mostly intended for really furious of France. And I too am a volunteer. One of the places that I "volunteer" is in monitoring cpdn's official email site, where we have to deal with all sorts of strange posts that need to be filtered. Relevant to this credit topic, there have been several posts from "unhappy people" about the credits that they've lost. One of these said thanks, but I haven't seen anything from the others. Or the PMers. I "misplaced" almost a million credits, but I know that they be back soon. They always are. Just like a couple of years ago when Oxford IT decided to tighten security, and put everything into VMs. Which caused all of the credits scripts to fail. Remember this? And how long it took Andy to unravel the spaghetti code of inter-connected scripts? Running it all one line at a time? Your comment re "real work" is totally out of order. It's not antagonism, it's exasperation at how people who've been with the project for years, start jumping up and down and screaming whenever there's a hiccup with credits. I know that a lot of people use them to tell if something is wrong with a project, and for playing various games like "who can get to x credits fastest", etc. (I don't know about 64 bit Linux users who crash thousands of models as soon as they start but never do anything about it, fit into this. But they're there.) Unlike the "credits" used by BOINC, the global researchers pay real money for this, and have a lot tied up in massive storage facilities, and large internet connections to allow the collection of data. These last 2 items were why it took the ANZ models over a year to appear - the research centre suddenly found out how much it was going to cost. And "from where the moderators sit", in between the crunching volunteers and the project people + researchers, we get to know a fair bit about what's going on. Which there is. Andy said that the credits would probably start getting worked on by Wednesday, after the MaRIUS models were on their way to the download servers. But everyone who has used computers for a while knows that time lines are stretchable. And this IS after all, about climate modelling. Which is all about very long amounts of time for every thing. And today is St Patrick's day, so "Murphy" will probably be up to extra mischief. Anyway, I'm probably supposed to be doing some "real work", so I'd better go and find out what it is. :) edit OK, one last look at email. Another person has just posted a Thanks on the email system. |

Re: Credit Hi guys, and indeed gals. I have been lurking and reading the various posts about the credit issues. Having been a cruncher here for over 10 years, (really, has it been THAT long!), I have seen the website crash, the credits go bonkers and various users pulling their hair out. For UK users, it always reminds me of the letters page of Private Eye "...I have been a subscriber for many years, but after your latest cover about the Queen I am cancelling my subscription..." To be honest, who cares about the credits? I let my (old, slow) computers chug away at units and somewhere in the back of my mind I feel good. If I am in some small way contributing to understanding what the climate is doing, and what we are doing to the planet, well, good. And Les...spiffing good job old chap. Well, s**t can always happen, but then the people running distributed projects need to respect those people that are donating their CPU time with all associated expenditure. And this seems to be a bit lacking here. On one side, the scripts that create the XML files for the stats sites (BOINCStats, FreeDC, etc) are sometimes not running at all or as in this incident, are in fact running and updating with the huge loss of credits all the sudden, when it would have been better to stop those in this case. To make it clear, I care less about the actual credits (it's from this project less than 2% of what I have crunched overall in the last few years) but I use the stats update twice a day as a general indicator of the "health" of the crunching systems. Now I got kind of used to the stats not updating for a while, but when I all the sudden saw the negative 100k, this set off the alarm bells, as I could not be sure if there was something seriously wrong with the system that is crunching this project, which just recently had been upgraded to Windows 10. Luckily, it was "just" a fuoobar with the project server, which hopefully will be resolved soon, but never the less, it caused me to scramble to see what was wrong. I am busy enough as it is, I could have seriously have done without that scare... Ralf |
