Perhaps worth putting it in the announcements for those who monitor that thread. I know most of those will spot this but there may be a few........

Good point Dave.
I've been posting here for so long that I had forgotten about N & A.

I've re-arranged it a bit.

To me, if it is taking that long to run the script, it seems like an awful lot of computer time to use up running the script every day, not to mention increased wear on the disks, perhaps they might last a bit longer before the next problem!

... time for a more aggressive archival strategy? It is, errrr, pointless to constantly recalculate the credits of old models. The breakpoint might be related to deadlines in some way: it would clearly be a bad idea to attempt to archive work units with running models. Maybe the possibly now-mythical killer trickle should be sent followed by archival. With the demise of model graphics on the Web site the interest in old models is relatively small.

I don't know since when, but subscribing a thread doesn't send an e-mail notification anymore...

So, if it is like this for everybody, no one is receiving notifications of news in the announcements thread by e-mail.

Thanks, I suspect that is part of the same problem that stops creation of new threads. If Les hasn't done it by the time I get back I will email Andy.

An Update.
After posting, I tried changing the "Community preferences" from "In a single daily email" to "Immediately, by email", and I just received a notification from this thread. So it works if using "Immediately, by email".

I'm going to switch back to "In a single daily email", and see what happens.

just got my 10,012,024 back, Woo and Hoo :-)

-snip-

By the way, your credits were apparently heavily weighted in early days of CPDN's boinc era. Hence your huge percentage jump. (You beat my high-jump.)

For what's it's worth, most of the people posting in defense of patience are what we used to call Beta testers -- for which, in recent years, NO CREDIT is awarded. They are dedicated to the advancement of Climate Science -- period. (Please don't think I'm here giving myself a pat on the back -- I'm much too old for such trivialities.)

Hang in there, Helix!

Best regards.

Hey ol' buddy astroWX ;-P

So you noticed Helix since he have bigger points than you in the past?
(pardon my laughter)

That is how stats works and it's important that folks now what folks are doing, right?

Probably that explains why credits haven't changed (again) for the last few days. I can see the trickles are being uploaded, so the totals will eventually reflect the work being done. We'll see what happens Saturday!

Some things never change... death, taxes, and CPDN credit problems.

I've been away from the project for over a year and returning I see that there's still endless discussion about CPDN credits. In fact, it still the most active - it's at the top of the non-sticky threads list, where it always has been.

I have participated in many different projects, and this is the only one that I have ever experienced credit issues with.

The other projects' credit systems just work.

For me, personally, I don't care much about whether I get CPDN credits or not.

But it would be nice if this can be fixed, once and for all. There's too much time and energy being wasted in this never-ending squabble.

Fully agree.

Problem is that Oxford still live in the mediaeval ages and look at crunchers as silly servants, they just don't understand how distributed computing works. They could fix it right away if they wanted.

There has got to be a better way to calculate the credits than the enormously wasteful (in computer resources) method of going back to day one and starting from scratch every time the credit script is run. It would seem to me that if they keep using this method, eventually it will take longer than 24 hours to run it and the results will already be out of date when they are posted. Or has this point already been reached and that’s why the credit script will now run only once a week.

As I understand it trickles were introduced to compensate for the length of some of the earlier climate models that could take months to complete.
Nowadays the time is much shorter. Would it offload the servers if trickles were eliminated as credit sources, and credit issued on the completion of a work unit?

Trickles provide partial credit for work done, and I think eliminating this credit could provoke strong negative reactions. IIRC the duration of tasks is not the only issue that trickles address but also the problem that units are subject to crashing prior to completion sometimes after running for several weeks. IOW such occurrence is in effect random and unpredictable. So obviously there would be a huge risk of uproar from the community if credits were awarded only if and when tasks finished without errors.

Jim

There is. That's what the archived data is about.
But remember what happened the two times that it was done?

hello all.
perhaps this off the topic of credit, but with the inability to start a new thread, I thought I would ask what is windows wine? Do windows 7, 10 etc programs run under it and is the user interface similar? If it runs ordinary windows programs as well as running bionic apps faster, how and where do I aquire it?

Thank you and enjoy your day

Hello Vicki

There's a thread about this in the Linux section, Running BOINC under WINE

No problem with posting here though.

As for Wine, the Wikipedia article gives a good overview. And right down at the bottom of that, is a link to the Wine web site.

Basically, it can be considered an extra layer that sits on top of Linux, in much the same way as a layer of cream sits in between pieces of a multi layer cake.
On one side is Linux, on the other, a set of programs that mimic other OSs, usually Windows. These "mimics" are written in publicly available code, so as not to infringe copyrights.

There are only two hard parts to running it:
1) It seems that you have to give up running BOINC directly on the Linux OS.
2) To run applications, (e.g. installing BOINC), you need to right click on the installer name, and then select something like "Run using Wine".
Otherwise it loads OK.
This may help install it: Wine 1.6.2 Stable Released – Install on Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint

When it's there, there's an item in the Menu of Linux, labelled Wine. Click this and you get a list of options for it, one of which is to go to the Windows C: drive.

Once on the C: drive, you just use a browser to go to the BOINC website and get a copy of Windows BOINC.

There's also an option to configure Wine. You can have any version of "Windows" from about 3.2 up to 10.
Because I ran XP Pro for years, that's what I selected.

If you want to look at the details of models that are running, you go to the C: drive, and start clicking icon after icon. (Roughly, from the left, it's 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st, 1st, 2nd. This should put you in the Projects folder.

As for what "Windows" programs will run, it varies. There's a web site somewhere that lists lots of programs, and just how compatible they are.
BOINC is listed as Very stable.

Speed is also variable apparently.

Wine is a program that can be installed in Linux and Mac computers that provides a “compatibility layer” that allows Windows applications to run on those systems. This allows Windows only model types to be run. This is important because there have been long periods recently when there were no Linux or Mac models available, only Windows.

edit:
Beat me to it Les. Your answer is much better.

Thank you for the useful answers, so in effect windows wine is a windows emulator, if I understand you correctly. Since I am already running windows, I think I will stick to its easy of use point and click, compared to the old days of ms-dos 3,3 etc, which was new when I was studying business computing, the subjects included system design and writing an application in a dbase3 clone interpreter called vp-info.
Yes I belong in Noah's Ark, remembering that from 1988-90. Later on I found out about a compiler for dbase 3, called clipper 5; with small changes in code, could produce a standalone .exe file. The point in this history lesson, emulators are good for porting programs, but most programs run best in their native platform. When I have a wet afternoon to fill in, with nothing better to do, I might put Linux and wine on a partition and compare run times on the same hardware, for curiosity's sake and will post the results. If anyone on the thread has done this before on an Intel I3 with an ati graphics card, I would like to know how they got on; little point in reinventing the wheel.

Thank you all and Good night from New Zealand, where locally it is 10:40pm Saturday as I click post.

Vicki.

And now for something completely different:

We have lift off at BOINCstats.
My credits are back, and my position has dropped back down to where it was before the crash.

:-)

Maybe it's a different issue, but my credits haven't changed at all in 5 days, though as before tasks are still progressing and completing. Leads me to think there continue to be problems with CPDN's network or servers. Making it all work is a job I'm glad not to have, seems to be difficult to get all the plates spinning at the same time.
