Hi

It looks like my BOINC manager tried to upload a work unit but failed due to a ''computation error''...Is there anything i can do on my side or is this a server problem?

Many thanks.

Hello Frank

Computation errors come before uploads.
If you're having problems uploading, then that's a different matter.

And your computer has crashed 3 models with what looks like either a permissions problem, or not enough disk space to write all of the files.

So it's not looking good for your 4th attempt.

Thing i don't understand is that SETI@home runs fine. I did initially have permissions problems with that but a few changes in my settings and making sure my firewall accepts all BOINC projects means my laptop should fully accept anything BOINC related now.

I've also allowed 50 GB of disk space to climateprediction.net

Each project has it's own files, all in separate folders, so there can be separate permissions problems.

And your latest attempt has now failed with the same error message.
No point in trying for more until you figure out what's wrong.

Also, it looks like you have only 4 GB main memory. That may not be enough, depending on how many work units you are running at once; the CPDN ones usually take more working memory than most.

Check in TaskManager to see what is going on.

Task manager isn't really telling me much other than communication deferred.

... communication deferred.

That's because your BOINC is asking for more work.
Go to the Projects tab, click on the project name, then click on No new tasks.

I doubt that you'll learn more for the manager than what's already been reported back to the server on each page for each model.

You'll need to look at the permissions of files and folders using an OS tool. Windows explorer perhaps?

I've done ''no new tasks'' but i don't really see the point of that because in my experience, downloads or lack thereof are the only real way of knowing if any trouble shooting has worked.

If would be very odd if i have no permissions problems with SETI@home but did with climateprediction.net..Also, there are no folders anywhere on my laptop because to do with CP.net.

One thing odd i have noticed though...My computer info is wrong on the CPDN side.

It's saying i have windows XP, when i in fact have Windows 8.1

Maybe there's some kind of conflict there and should start a new account?

Apologies, this bit is "rocket science". :)
(Or maybe it's alchemy.)

On Windows, the default is for folders there to be hidden.

BOINC wouldn't have attempted to start the app until all downloads are complete - and that's a significant number of both programs and data files before the first task runs.

It has been known for anti-virus applications to prevent new and unknown programs from running.

Yes i know about antivirus...And again...I made sure anything from BOINC was made an exception in my antivirus...I had that problem with S@H and resolved it..So it really can't be that.

I am not a windows user so this may be totally off the wall but have you checked in your waste bin or whatever Windows calls it these days to see if the folders are there? I ask because as Richard says, the tasks couldn't start to run without the files having been downloaded but certainly on my Linux system, some tasks, the folders go after a crash and on the other hand with the short models which are no longer available for Linux, the folders stay even after successful completion of the tasks. Not quite sure how to approach diagnosis if this is the case though. Perhaps making sure you have settings to download the maximum amount of work and being there when it downloads so you can suspend computation quickly enough to check permissions on things?

If from the perspective of an experienced Windows CPDN cruncher I am talking rubbish, please someone tell me!

Dave..There's no work units available at the moment, and no hidden folders in the trash bin...There's no folders of any kind on my system to do with CPDN.

Iv'e allowed a very high amount of disk space as well.

When more WU's become available and more attempts at downloads are made then i'll be able to see which tweaks work and which ones don't, but until then i can't really know...Trial and error and all that.
