Just signed up. Tried setting up a 32-character password during the signup process in BOINC. The process kept failing with a generic "tray again later" error. After trying a few times, I dipped into the knowledge I have from past experiences with poorly-implemented credential systems. I shortened the password to 20 characters, and it worked. I don't fault the project for BOINC's useless error message, but I don't think 32 chars is too much to expect these days. It could have been worse, though. It could have done what has happened to me many times on many infuriating web sites: Seem to accept a password that is longer than restrictions allow, silently truncate it to a shorter length behind the scenes, then happily reject what I think is the proper password when I try to log in. |

haven't tried to work out what the password length restriction is here but I have come across the silent truncating problem on other sites. I have longer passwords on things like my email, and sites where I have personal information that might be of more use to those with evil intent than what I store here. |
