New rule Alan: With Windows work being few and far between, the only way to be sure of getting some is to not run other projects. The window of opportunity this time was around an hour, so that's how long your computer would have had to run out of other project work, and decide to download a climate model. Unless it owed time to the other projects, which would make it less likely to ask for some from here. And the people signing up these days seem to have big many-core-machines, which will grab work by the dozen. |

Alan - Here is what I do to run other projects (for example WCG) and also get work from CPDN when it is available. 1) In Computer Preferences, set your queue to "Store 1 days of work". 2) Update WCG (to download 1 days of work). 3) Set WCG to "No new tasks" 4) In Computer Preferences, set your queue to "Store 10 days of work" and "10 additional days of work". Now your computer will be busy for the next 24 yours on WCG tasks. In the meantime, the computer will check CPDN every hour for new CPDN tasks. You do have to repeat the process once your WCG tasks are finished - In other words, every 24 hours. |

The recent batch of Windows work was a global only model, which runs fast, a day or so. The batches of Linux work still waiting are very detailed, and will take about 14 days on my fast computers. After 3.5 days, they still haven't reached the first zip. But soon I hope. As for what OS researchers prefer, it seems that Linux is easier to work with for large, detailed, models. |

I'm doing that but I have given up (temporarily) on WCG and running SETI and Milky Way at Home (both set to no new tasks at the moment). I think I will set the work option for these to 1/2 day in future. I usually find that 5 days work (+5 or 6) is good enough to snaffle CPDN work, but both my macines are only 4core (i5's). Maybe 10 days is a better choice. |

work for windows PCs is going away pretty fast, but for linux its on the server for days... I agree. The powers that be at Oxford may have over estimated the number of Linux machines out there that are ready and willing to run these new very large and resource demanding models. On the other hand there are at least 10 time a many Windows machines out going to waste. If they want these models run quickly going Linux only may be a mistake. |

I've shifted a few of my PCs to Linux but I'm not getting any downloads. Anyone have any tips? You may not have 32 bit libraries installed? This is a post in a sticky in the Linux section of these boards on how you may solve that issue: https://www.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=8008&postid=59939 |

I've shifted a few of my PCs to Linux but I'm not getting any downloads. Anyone have any tips? Ty geophi! I've installed these.. we'll see if the scheduler likes me now :) Edit: I have work to do now. Formatted my ubuntu (19.04) install as the library install was fighting back. I like mint better anyway! |

Alan - I have a different strategy that has the advantage of solving two problems at once. Step 1: Turn on VT-X in your BIOS. Step 2: Download the VBOX version of BOINC, which gives you the full VBOX product. You could also download something like VMPlayer, but you need VBOX for some BOINC products, so you might as well use that. Step 3: Run VBOX stand alone, and create a 32 bit linux VM. This solves the 32 bit library problem. Step 4: Install BOINC in this VM. Set it to run only CPDN, plus any NCI apps you might want to run. This has no problems with 32 bit libraries, is always asking CPDN for work, and if you want to pause the task, just suspend the entire VM. No worrying about checkpointing or keeping stuff in memory or anything like that. Want to find one of the largest known primes? Try PrimeGrid. Or help cure disease at WCG. |

Question on a Windows 845 work unit. The following unit posted trickles and uploaded as complete and successful, but received no credit. As a side note during it's computation I did have a power failure as a result of the tornadoes that hit Dallas TX last night. I was not home but it appears that my system did a graceful shutdown via my UPS battery backup. https://www.cpdn.org/workunit.php?wuid=11912558 Could someone more knowledgeable than my self look at the results to see if they were valid and if credit will be granted later ? Thanks Bill F Dallas Tx In October 1969 I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; There was no expiration date. |

It looks OK. You probably just missed last Saturdays credit run for your first trickle. |

Same over here... <core_client_version>7.14.2</core_client_version> in english:The system cannot find the drive specified. This happens about 3 or 4 times in a year. https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=21756658 |

work for windows PCs is going away pretty fast, but for linux its on the server for days... Possibly since there has been such a long time with no work for Linux machines, that some (how many?) may have abandoned ClimatePrediction and are running other projects instead. Since CPDN is important to me, I have left mine enabled and willing to run 50% of my boinc time on it. So I have started getting these work units, including hadam4h ones. But I have only a 4-core machine, so how many can I run? I still get hadcm3s work units, so they run too. Right now, all four cores are running ClimatePrediction work units. It may take a while for former Linux users who gave up on ClimatePrediction to realize there are now Linux work units and come back. |

It may take a while for former Linux users who gave up on ClimatePrediction to realize there are now Linux work units and come back. Yes, I expect that is it. I am throwing everything I have at it now, but others will take up the slack after they learn about it. There has been a long dry spell for Linux users. |

In an attempt to get new work, I have done the following: Installed VMWare Workstation Player 15 on my Windows 10 computer. Installed LinuxMint Tina 19.2 32-bit version in that Virtual Machine (I hope that avoids the 32bit libraries problem). Installed BOINC in Mint Linked it to my account It downloaded 1 task (Virtual Machine is only using 1 core) and according to BOINC Manager, it appears to be crunching OK. Looking in my CPDN account, a virtual machine has been added to my list of computers, Since I am a complete Linux Newbie, I ask if I have I missed anything, or should it crunch OK and report OK? |

In an attempt to get new work, I have done the following: That's pretty much all there is to it. Presumably, you gave the VM enough ram to run (since it's running). 2 GB is enough. Want to find one of the largest known primes? Try PrimeGrid. Or help cure disease at WCG. |

Yes, if it is running, you are good. But don't reboot or suspend the CPDN work units too often. It doesn't like that, and will eventually fail if done too often. If you need to reboot, then I would suggest manually suspending BOINC first, but how you do that in your arrangement is another matter. I just use straight Linux (or Windows). |
