Yes, if it is running, you are good. But don't reboot or suspend the CPDN work units too often.
It doesn't like that, and will eventually fail if done too often.

If you need to reboot, then I would suggest manually suspending BOINC first, but how you do that in your arrangement is another matter.
I just use straight Linux (or Windows).

With a VM, there's no need to suspend the "task" at all. Or to reboot. Or anything like that. You can simply suspend the VM itself -- which freezes the VM in place. It can be stopped and started like that without risk. As far as the CPDN app is concerned,or, for that matter, anything running inside the VM, the VM never stopped running at all. The fact that the VM was suspended is not detectable from inside (unless you're measuring the time.)

Note that this means suspending the VM from the VM control panel. NOT by executing any linux commands from inside the VM.

On the VMWare Player, click on the "pause symbol", and then select "Suspend Guest". Do NOT choose "Shut Down Guest" or "Restart Guest".

Thanks. I had seen the "suspend Guest" in the VM control panel, so thanks for explaining its use.

Since my computer runs 24/7 (until Windows causes problems!!), I should get a long run without needing to suspend.
As I'm on Win 10 Pro, I can delay any update reboots, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for some successful crunching.

In the mean time my other cores are crunching Cancer Markers on WCG in Windows.

New Work and Old Preferences....

During the recent update to current BOINC software all of the Project related preferences, (Which application you wished to run) disappeared. Are W/U's now being distributed solely by System configuration and capacity or in the back ground are "old" preferences still in play ?

Thanks
Bill F

Seems to me to be the latter - previously preferences still in-play. Event log says:

climateprediction.net | No tasks sent
climateprediction.net | No tasks are available for UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean
climateprediction.net | No tasks are available for UK Met Office HadCM3 short

I.e. only 2 projects mentioned, despite showing others applications queued on the Project Status page. (HadAM4 at N144 resolution, N126 resolution. I'm running Win 10 64-bit.)

How can I subscribe to all applications again, short of creating a whole new account?

Incidentally, I tried to see if resetting the still-visible preferences to defaults would help, but CPDN replied with its usual condescending wrist-slap for daring to experiment ;-)

Cheers,
Luke

The only work available at present is for Linux.
There hasn't been any Windows work for a while now.

You can see what OS each type is for from the Applications page.

The "preferences" part of choosing the type that you want to run was been disabled, as part of the change to how the work is made available, a few months ago.
Now computers are sent whatever is currently available for the OS that they're running.

This was discussed in this thread: Preferences - project options missing

#849 3,500 WAH2 Tasks for East Asia region 50Km resolution, 24 month tasks. Poured into the hopper just 45 minutes after you posted Les.

Edit: With the number of computers looking for work some with 40 cores or more they won't last long.

Got one but eleven cpu's are idle. I can see that work is available. Some kind of quota system?

It's probably just BOINC, which starts off with one or two to see how these long tasks fit in with the short tasks from other projects, and then it builds up the work.

If your computer was exclusively running cpdn, then it would get the maximum number that you've got set, because it doesn't have to juggle the workload of long and short tasks.

The only work available at present is for Linux.

That information became obsolete half a day ago.
There's now 2 thousand or so Windows tasks.

And this could be obsolete by tomorrow.

The only way to tell what's current, is to keep an eye on this page: Project status

#850 and 851
Two more batches of East Asia models, 3,500 in each. Last one at ten past one this morning UK time but going fast. Last server update at 0745 showed 2206 left.

Edit: For those new to CPDN those were windows batches.

Yep, as I predicted, those Windows tasks have all gone, so it's back to Linux only.
