Peter has made two posts criticizing BOINC, and adding words at the end which are against forum rules.
So I've been deleting them.

Has latest post is similar, but saying that BOINC is nice, and without the unacceptable words.

ROFL! You didn't notice I was being sarcastic then (hence the [titter]). So the forum rules state we must worship Boinc programmers? I used no swearwords.... do you have a special list of words for this forum? I was actually banned from a forum for saying "damn", because the mod was very religious.

Peter, life is unsure and sometimes not fair. We have all been through it.

I think another thing to find out is why your data are coming in through a pipe and not a file? Or a misleadingly named file tmp.

I think the problem may be the BOINC version.

For the BOINC site, it says that version is experimental.

So, where did you get that version version 7.16.6?

7.16.6 probably came from a package installation. When I installed BOINC from a package on Ubuntu 20.04 that's the version I got. On 22.04 the version is 7.18.1. For Linux machines, according to the site, it's recommended to install BOINC using a package manager.

I've also gotten "bad buffin of data" errors before and would also like to know what they mean.

From memory when I installed BOINC on Ubuntu 20.xx I used from the terminal screen

sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

rather than the package install. No apparent problems.

These errors were discussed in this thread awhile back.

I'm not sure anything was resolved. When I infrequently get them. it was usually in a task or tasks where I exited boinc and restarted.

Is anything wrong and if it is wrong then the instructions given on the Boinc web site should be changed for us. Some WU's are normal.

I know this is getting off topic,
I used a package manager version only the once. Found it stuck pieces of BOINC every where, had trouble finding and maintaining it that way, plus all the permission problems (why do they insist on a separate user to control the BOINC install?), also installed as a service which I then had to learn how to control from the command line.

So any other Linux install I have done or updates have all been from the BOINC website and it all works fine, all in one place (still a small permission problem but that is easy to fix).

So if it recommended for Linux users to use a package manager I don't agree with it.

My boinc-client is 7.16.11 that I got from EPEL for my RHEL8.6 distro of Linux.
Similarly for boinc mgr.

If the Boinc site is giving instructions to do "sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager" then it is their responsibility to place the proper version from where ever this command gets it.
Anyway, what's done, is done. I am not going to abort just to change versions. As it is, even if I look or sneeze too hard, the WU goes into error.

I see the responsibility as being with the package managers to keep up to date with the releases. However BOINC and many other program developers do not keep all their instructions up to date all the time and those responsible for keeping package managers up to date will always have to prioritise which packages to check most often.

Actually, it's the responsibility of the software packager (in this case, the Linux repository maintainers) to take an appropriate snapshot of the BOINC source code, and package it in a way that suits their distribution and its management tools. That's the way the Linux world works.
