Tasks have started appearing on the server. Linux only for this lot unless you use WSL or a VM of some description. In three minutes time when my box updates after the backoff from last attempt to get work I will be able to confirm that they are downloading OK..Fired up the ubuntu VM and four HadAM4 tasks have downloaded. Two tasks are running happliy and the other two are ready to start. The mojave mac VM is crunching it's four tasks in parallel, with the last two tasks ready to start. The spice is flowing again here, too. I'm 15m into one of the N144 tasks while the remaining MacOS tasks drain out on that machine (another box still has quite a few to chew through, should be done in a week and a half or so with the backlog), and the rest of the Linux boxes seem to be downloading happily while they finish out some Einstein tasks. First one that started running had this at 16 minutes into processing. Model crashed: ATM_DYN : NEGATIVE THETA DETECTED. Another on same PC has made it to 20 min. ID: 65327 · |

That message means that the starting parameters caused the model to run off into unrealistic physics, so it was stopped. Which is the sort of thing that the researchers want to know, so Thanks. ID: 65328 · |

Nothing from testing that looks to be producing main site work in a hurry but at least I got a retread yesterday. Edit: A seg fault rather than missing libraries but I can hope that running it on an AMD processor when it failed on an Intel machine might mean it will work! ID: 65385 · |

Eehhh... if you're getting segfaults on Intel and not AMD, or AMD and not Intel, then something is either fouled up with the hardware, or the binary is seriously screwed up. Despite being in competition, they both try to make very sure that the binary behavior of programs is identical between then. When it's not, it's led to some interesting edge cases and security violations, but that's at application/OS interface stuff, not just compute behavior. I'm down to 4 tasks running. :( They'll drain in a couple days and I suppose I'll sell my heaters... they're "not crap," and probably worth more than I paid for them by some good margin by now. Eehhh... if you're getting segfaults on Intel and not AMD, or AMD and not Intel, then something is either fouled up with the hardware, or the binary is seriously screwed up. The differences between processor types and also between operating systems when most tasks for CPDN used to have tasks that would run on Windows, Mac or Linux are dealt with by the statistical program that analyses batch results rather than just individual task results. There are minor differences in the rounding algorithms used between different chips which is what leads to some tasks working on one architecture or one chip and not another. I may be wrong but I think that failures on one architecture then succeeding on another is less common than it used to be but it certainly still happens. ID: 65387 · |

Can you enable in http debug in event log options, click on retry on one of the downloads and see what the output in the event log is? It's certainly consistent with server overload from too many people hammering it, but are there that many Macs as to render the server entirely unable to serve requests? I'm seeing backoffs in the "multiple hours" range, so load should drop off pretty quickly after the first slam. I'm not seeing any evidence that a single request has succeeded. The server responds quickly and normally on http - so it seems like it's an issue with the https side of things. They're not running... at least, none of mine. They may be assigned to machines and in that state, but without the resources able to download, they're not computing. All mine are listed "in progress" according to the site. I have 16 of them on one 8 core VM, all waiting to download. And 19 on another VM, same state. The only reason I don't have more is because I've turned off new tasks - if you've got a large queue set up (which a lot of the VMs do, I set mine to the max size to try and get as many tasks on my boxes that would actually complete them as possible, vs just rejecting them), a machine will pull down a lot of tasks over time. ... though maybe if one were to change the resource path in the client_state.xml file to http vs https and restart boinc... (I'm not going to do that, server's broken and needs to be fixed, and I expect that will happen soon enough) ID: 65410 · |
