Possibly, but there are a significant number here who don't really care about credits. I suspect that it will be the next gap in scientists presenting work to send out will be what enables the time to be spent on fixing the system rather than any withdrawal of machines.

Credit is a recognition of cunchers' contribution.

No credit, no recognition. No recognition for work done, no more work.

This is probably the only way to force things to change.

The problem is that the people running this project don’t seem to understand that there is an art to the care and feeding of volunteer workers. You can’t treat them like paid workers because they don’t need the job. They can just walk away at any time.
We, the Crunchers, have been getting the mushroom treatment for a long time. For those who don’t know, the mushroom treatment is, it’s when they keep you in the dark and every once in a while they dump manure on you.
The credits may not be important to those doing the science, but, they are very important to some of the people volunteering their computers to this project.

Wonder of wonders, the credit script has apparently run. I haven't heard what they did to fix it, but at least it's been run today. Edit...at least the tasks have been given credit. I don't see an update to my individual PC stats yet.

I haven't seen any evidence of the credit script being run - my credits haven't changed. I emailed the project on Monday and suggested they venture onto the message board to tell people what is going on, what they are doing to fix it and to apologise. In my mind, the volunteers provide the means to run the project, so they are an asset to be nurtured and supported. I got no response except for an automated reply, which suggests to me they aren't placing enough importance on the volunteer community.

I won't be ending my involvement with the project over this as I see global warming as the number one issue on the planet (and credits aren't my driving motive), but I imagine a few will. I also think a few people might give up because the project is basically thumbing its nose at its most important asset - its volunteer contributors and ambassadors.

I see lots of evidence of credit being posted.

Please check you all this project status info page, sort it by clicking twice in Project status column header to see Production above, and tell me what do you see...

Sarcasms apart, at this page you can check that today anything has changed about credits update of the project.

A month ago, when my previous post, I set cpdn to "won't get new tasks" status in my boinc manager, although I left it proccesing present tasks. Today it finished and uploaded the last one. I have about a hundred tasks to validate and I am wondering about which other boinc project choose for crunching.

Just in case someone from the staff might be interested, I care more about the lack of communication and poor interest of them with volunteers than the fact itself of a technical problem. In the assumption, of course, that they are actively trying to solve it. If not, the problem is even greater.

I'll keep in touch with the cnpd project in the boinc manager to see how does evolve this subject and may be in a future I'll get back to crunch, or may not.

Anyway, good luck.

At least there is evidence of work being done on this now. Not only have tasks been granted credit even though it has not made it through to credit for computers going up yet but the number of tasks I have waiting for validation has dropped significantly. It would be nice to have an update from Oxford however saying what has been done and what is remaining to be done.

Yes. I now have credit for all my completed tasks. However, it still says: Validation pending (88)

Exactly! I have been crunching for many years and this is hardly the first time there were problems. I have always gotten my credits in the end, but I find the near total lack of feedback very annoying. Someone should be able to take 10 minutes out of their week to give a brief update.

Many thanks to you and the other forum regulars for keeping us updated and answering questions!

I can see some progress :
- all 5-years old tasks waiting for validation (71) have disappeared.
- some credit appears now for my recent or current tasks in my profile, but it isn't yet visible in Boinc Manager.

Yes all very positive signs of a good script are showing... Internally credit has been granted and accounts updated.

Next I suppose we will need to look at how the Stat's are being made available for export.

Bad luck : the 71 tasks waiting for validation since 2012 went back.
Recent credit isn't yet visible in BOINC Manager.

Validation is not used on this project as it is in most other project's. There are no wingmen and no other WU to validate against. When you click on Validation Pending and see WU's if there is a Credit amount listed for the WU then the project algorithms have validated your result and granted credit.

Past that you can basically forget the validation screen. The other two screens for Invalid and Error should be reviewed for issues, if repetitive on your system(s)

In boinc-manager I now see recent average and total credit updated for the first time in a long time.
I could complain about the details but -- not.
Keep on crunching :)

After contacting the project, I received the following.

Hi Dave,

Andy B is currently running the main credit script to get an upto date figure using the Œregenerate all from day 0¹ mechanism we are historically using. He has designed a replacement system that then only records and processes credit since last calculated which will be much faster and run on a daily basis.

Regards

David

As pointed out below, we could have been told this was happening and while those of us who have had direct contact with project people assumed work was happening and were pretty sure of it.....

I too have credits updated and have now restored my allocation of computer time to the project. I note Dave that this new script is capable of running daily - I await with baited breath (not that I normally look at it daily but probably will do now out of curiosity for a few days).

Seriously, someone from the project itself should be communicating with us instead of you having to take all of the flak.

And the update has gotten gotten picked up by at least one of the stats sites. Thanks to the project staff and those who have been keeping us updated.

And now before my credit can increase again we need some more Linux tasks! I really don't want to go back to crunching under WINE!
