My primary BOINC machine is a Dell Precision laptop. Thi s machine dual boots both Windows XP and Fedora 1.

I would like to be able to process BOINC units while booted up into both XP & Fedora. That is, install the Windows BOINC client on a FAT32 disk that can be seen from both Windows XP & Fedora. Install the Linux BOINC client whereever. When I am in Windows it then processes the work units & when I boot into Linux, it continues those same units, etc.

I used to be able to do this, albeit a while ago, with classic SETI@home, but then they started tracking what client was processing a unit and started over if the client software changed.

If I can do the above, then I have another issue. I have installed BOINC on my C drive (ntfs). If I uninstall it and then reinstall onto my D drive (fat32) can I just copy over the ...\\BOINC\\projects and all my work to date will be retained, or is there a gotcha.

I am running Seti, Climate Prediction & LHC BOINC clients.

To share workunits between different OS is not possible with BOINC either. BOINC is even more "complicated" than Seti@home in that it tracks lots more information about who is processing what workunit. You can't even move a workunit between two PCs, which was possible in Seti@home.

Actually you are allowed to do this in CPDN, though not SETI under BOINC. Unfortunately for this purpose they have to use the same OS, so the sort of sharing envisaged here would not work.

That's another design feature to prevent cheating which was rampant at classic Seti.

due the design of today, perhaps you have to put away the idea to use 2 os,
2 clients and one common work.

Just a laud spoken other idea, without classification.

use 2 different Data Section:

2 os, 2 Clients, AND the two clients are installed into 2 different directories
and are running each a own WU.
Perhaps for clima this can be done.

So everytime you are on OS 1, the work for client 1 for wu(1) is going on.

you dualboot into the other OS(2), then client2 and work(2) is done.

This would mean, you MUST change the OS in a frequent way to let crunch and having progress for BOTH running work (WUs)

Yeah, what dogbytes said is probably about your only option. I think that BOINC would basically see this as two different computers, and post your stats as such. I was wondering the same thing for a time, as I'm about to change my computer from windows to dual boot linux/windows. I think I'll just install the BOINC client on linux, and use linux most of the time.

I've heard that some people have had luck using wine to run the windows client under linux. I have never messed with wine as I have 2 different computers hooked up to a KVM switch. One does linux, the other does windows. I find this much less complicated than dual booting. Of course it does require the use of 2 computers...
