BOINC Release 7.16.x (when it is released for primary use) is intended to only work on 64-bit Operating Systems. This new newest version of the BOINC client (7.16.4) is released FOR TESTING ONLY for 64-bit Windows. Users who are continuing to use 32-bit Operating Systems will need to continue to use the current 7.14.2 BOINC release after 7.16.x is released for recommended use. The 7.16.4 development test version for Windows 64-bit is now available on the primary BOINC download site: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php |

Strange. 7.16.3 is still available as 32bit. Odd numbers denote a testing branch and in theory even numbers release versions. This may mean there will be a 7.16.4 32 bit version eventually. I will keep an eye open and possibly ask over on the BOINC fora at some point. |

Please ask them to fix the numbering on it. I have installed 7.16.4 on four Ubuntu 18.04.3 machines, and it seems to do so successfully. But it still identifies itself as "7.16.3" in BOINC Manager (and BOINCTasks). (I use the LocutusofBorg PPA, so the problem may be there.) On the other hand, the Windows version properly identifies itself as 7.16.4. They all work fine for me. |

Dave -- Yes, I'll check on that 7.16.3 32-bit version as well. I'm assuming that release 7.16.x is ultimately intended to only work on 64 bit Operating Systems, and that 7.16.3 as a 32-bit test version will eventually be removed -- as it was made available for testing before the decision to make 7.16.x a 64-bit product only. But I will check it out with the BOINC testing group !! |

Hi Jim1348 -- I've reported this to the BOINC testing/development team. Will advise if/when I get a reply. |

Thanks. I know I should do it, but I would get it wrong a couple of times first before I got it right. |

Long term this may mean the end of using WINE to run Windows tasks with Linux as recently, the 64 bit version has been crashing under WINE as well as on some Windows boxes though from what I have read the problem on Windows boxes should be fixed with this. Now checking on desktop to see if this will run under WINE. - Just discovered that after clean install of 19.10 I hadn't re-installed WINE so now doing that. Edit: 7.16.4 crashes under WINE as soon as I switch to advanced view. Seems fine in simple view. |

David Anderson has reported that there is a major bug with GPU detection in test release 7.16.4. As a result the test release has been withdrawn. Expect to see BOINC 7.16.5 released for Windows 64 bit testing soon! |
