As mentioned, I've just returned to monitoring activity. I went to my birthday page which formerly had a couple dozen people on it and find I am now the only one there. I know that a majority of participants stay for only a while and then depart but from what I see on my team (4 left out of around 100 if I recall correctly) it doesn't look good. I know some of you run under several efforts other than CPDN, so might be able to say if this is a general trend. Is it possible the smartphone popularity has reduced the number of desktop users who would be drawn to distributed computing? |

With so little work for Windows user there is little for them to stay. Most have gone to other projects. |

ok, that's certainly not anything that I would have guessed. I did not know that CPDN was Windows only. Is there a similar site for Linux machines or plans to put CPDN on Linux? From what I just read about BOINC, it can handle a wide variety of OS's. What are your thoughts about the future here? |

It's the other way around: cpdn is currently Linux only. cpdn does have programs for Linux, Mac, and Windows, but it's up to the researchers what they use. There were 3 groups of researchers active until early last year that ran Windows. Why they disappeared no one knows; perhaps it was the virus. Those groups were in Oregon in the US Pacific North West, Mexico, and Australia - New Zealand. I'll know about the future when it arrives. :) |

Snooping around I see that the top 41 computers are all running Linux with Win10 at #42 and the applications page shows Weather at Home as the only one running Windows. I have WaH tasks on my machine at the moment. I believe that a single SSD can have both Windows and Linux in different partitions, no? In that way, one could do work during the day on Windows and then overnight have Linux running CPDN? I don't understand your reluctance to tell the future. Elon Musk does it daily! : ) |

No need for that. with WSL you can run Linux tasks while running Windows. There are posts on it here in the number crunching section and also over on the BOINC fora. |

Thanks, I'll investigate...wow, just briefly looking over the number crunching section I realize I should have been reading it all along as a gold mine of information is there. So, I return with this edit simply to say a second thank you for the reference. |
