Looking more and more like the problem is to do with wxWidgets 3.1.6 rather than the BOINC code. Both 7.20.0 and 7.21.0 built against the default 3.0.5 that the Ubuntu repositories have so building your own on a Linux box is likely to be fine. The Windows executable on the other hand...
