Hello,
Just wanted to inform you that signing up is very difficult.
Boinc Manager gives an error, sending people to the website for signing up.
On the website itself it works if you use the link on the landing page.

However on subpages like when clicking "join" on the message boards links to this page:
https://www.cpdn.org/signup.php
which does not allow signing up as it wants people to accept terms and conditions, for which no checkbox exists.
All it asks for is:
    Choose screen name
    Your email address
    Choose password

best regards

I tried removing the project on a windows client, rejoining with a different email than the one signed up with and was unable to do so. I will email Andy. I wonder if when copying something over from the testing site he has included part of the code there which requires one to have an invitation code?

Just got this from Andy,

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for this. This should now be fixed.

Hi

BOINC Manager is not allowing me to add my existing account to a new host. :-(

The BM error message says:

Failed to add project
Please try again later
Click Finish to close

This error occurs whether I select CPDN in the project drop down list or if I add the URL manually.

regards
Tim

Tried to test it but I don't have a spare email to try it out with. I will let Andy know that this problem has resurfaced.

Hi Thanks for the reply.

FYI: I am running BOINC Manager v7.22.2 on a Windows 7 Pro host (yes, I know it's old !! but Win 8 was awful, Win 10 is a pain and the host machine doesn't support Win 11 :-( )

All other CPU based projects run perfectly fine. :-)

PS: Am glad the project is up and running again after not having any tasks for some years.

regards

Just read your post again. I added a new host yesterday without any issues. Could you try again and see if you are still getting the message?

Edit: It may be worth updating to the latest version of BOINC 7.24.1

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried again twice today and I keep getting the Failure notice as reported previously.

I also added another project to this same host and that worked perfectly - I already had an account with this other project, so once I input my email and password, it added the new project and downloaded the required files to this new host, and with zero issues - so my install of BOINC Manager seems to be OK.

With CPDN, I am not even getting to the section where I can enter my email/password info. :-(

I will let the current tasks (from other projects) finish, then reboot this specific host and install 7.24.1 and see what happens.

Further info:
---------------
I have a second host, that was running BM 7.20.2 and CPDN was already "joined" to this second host. So, this was reset and then removed and I used the "Add project" function to add CPDN project back onto the host...and it FAILED with the same report as before. :-(

regards

Hi

I just upgraded this second host to v7.24.1 and it also FAILED to add CPDN project. So, now 2 different hosts, in 2 different locations 20 miles apart, using 2 different ISPs and 3 different versions of BOINC Manager - and ALL have the same issue.

Dave, do you want to take this up with Andy? It might be related to the implementation of the new server.

However, I have had no problems adding new hosts (linux & windows) in the last couple of weeks so I'm not sure.

Emailing Andy now. The other day I added a new Windows host (actually running Windows in a VM rather than using WINE and that is now crunching two of the current batch. I have just launched another VM to try with a windows client under WINE. And that one worked OK too.

Odd. I have just checked and found that on both Linux and Windows hosts I can remove the project and re-add it.
I have emailed Andy. In the meantime could you enable http debug via the event log options and try again and post the output? Then stop the http debug or it will fill up your event log very quickly!

I have to admit however that right now I am stumped!

Hi

I just enabled the http debug on my second host.

And then I tried to add CPDN to this second host using BM v7.24.1 and it sort of worked as it got to the Terms of use "page" (which it didn't do before) - I clicked on "I agree" and it then gave the same failure notice as previously advised.

I'll send you the error log by PM, as the log seems to contains personal data relating to my CPDN account!

I cannot try with the original host right now but will do so tomorrow, along with setting the debug error log.

regards
Tim

Thanks, will forward to Andy to see if he has any ideas. I could if you are willing also forward to Richard who may have some clues? (If that is OK with you Richard?

I think there may also be a way of adding the project by modifying an XML file. Richard would know the answer to that.

Forwarded to the moderators email list after searching through it myself and not coming up with anything. I deleted some of the stuff that was clearly to do with other projects to reduce the text those who know more than me will have to look through to see if there are any clues.

Got this back from Andy

Hi Dave,

Thank you for this. The only thing I can find on this so far is:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/secauthn/decryptmessage--schannel
I think this is either a BOINC issue or something has changed with this Microsoft library. I see he is using Windows 7 which I understand is no longer supported by Microsoft. So I suspect this hasn't been caused a recent change in this library. At the moment I am unsure. Do we have any more reports of this?
Best wishes,
Andy

My one question that I have asked Andy is could this be a certificate issue. Are certificates still being updated for Windows7?

Actually, no. This log came from BOINC v7.24.1: the reference to 'schannel' is a clue that the security policy has changed with this version of BOINC, and schannel replaces the old 'certificate bundle which the release manager forgets to update' problem.

I'm using Windows 7 too, and my Windows machines don't have any problem connecting with any BOINC server using schannel (although, to be fair, I haven't tested detaching and re-attaching). I do keep my web browser up-to-date on those machines, and I do install the few remaining security patches issued by Microsoft. That may help.

Thanks Richard. I had forgotten about that change. Prior to it, I had a soft link from my WINE installation of the Windows client to the Linux certificates which likewise got updated automagically.

Well, I tried doing exactly the same thing, using a Windows 7 machine running BOINC v7.24.1 - and it got attached at the first attempt. This is what I did:

Ran machine dry by setting 'no new work'
Switch off auto-run at startup
Applied today's big security update, and rebooted machine
Started BOINC from menu. Deleted CPDN
Closed BOINC, including shutting down client.
Restarted BOINC. Waited for all startup checks to complete.
Set <http_debug> logging.
Ran 'Attach to project' wizard. Selected CPDN from list - no alteration made.
Agreed to 'Terms of use' / licence agreement.
Clicked 'Existing user' and supplied my own email address and password.
Reached 'finish' page in wizard - no other questions asked.
ODDITY: the actual 'finish' button was greyed out, and wouldn't accept clicks. Closed wizard with red 'X' instead.

And that was all - no fuss, no bother. I'll send a copy of my event log to the dev team for comparison.

Hiya

I got to that same point, and pretty much did the same procedure (on the second host), but BM returned a Failed notice before I got the chance to enter ANY account details as you were able to (as follows):

Clicked 'Existing user' and supplied my own email address and password.
Reached 'finish' page in wizard - no other questions asked.

I never got to the above point. :-(

FYI: The first host didn't even get to the "Terms" section :-(

I would suggest that unless there are perhaps security reasons to consider, that you do NOT waste any more time on this.

I suspect the issue is an incompatibility, between my Windows 7 host and whatever the CPDN server is expecting to "see" as far as the host operating system is concerned...and given this is being done over https protocols, then it could be a real pain to try and find it out why it is failing.

The fact is though, that every other BOINC project that has been installed on BOTH the hosts I am running, install without any issues at all. But it might just be that ALL the other projects are less "demanding" when it comes to whatever configuration of host hardware and OS, is trying to connect via BOINC Manager ;-)

One day, when I do not need a Windows 7 environment on both hosts, I will upgrade to a more recent OS, and on those newer PC(s), then I will try again to help CPDN. :-)

best regards for all your help
Tim
