Usually CPDN has some periods of no new work in a year. In addition to more testing, I think we can take advantage of those windows to do rebranding in the future. Once we get enough results for all outstanding batches, if we pause resend for timeouts until all deadline expires, we might just get a window where we can mess with project setup with little consequence even if things don't go as planned. +1 This is the thing which disturbed me most! We are in the final stretch of finishing 18000 something work-units, there are less than around a 1000 WUs left, and out of nowhere, somebody decides to change the website and its address. And chaos breaks-out! Why not wait until all WUs are returned and then make a big announcement, change everything and when all works, send new WUs out? There have been long stretches with ZERO WUs, this would have been the right time to overhaul the entire eco-system of climateprediction.net. |

And chaos breaks-out!Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The change was not 'out of nowhere' but planned for some time. CPDN thought they had dealt with all issues and the change would be smooth. It's not the first time CPDN have changed server, though this change was more substantial. |

Why not wait until all WUs are returned and then make a big announcement, change everything and when all works, send new WUs out?Management doesn't want to wait, if they decide, than for now and not for the best technical moment. Look as SONOS, how they have ruined their Reputation with the decision to push, better force out an unfinished and scandalous app Supporting BOINC, a great concept ! |

Woah... Yeti, I've sat on the meetings when the website changes were discussed. This has been planned for months and the people who run CPDN have been doing so for a long time. This is absolutely not about management "rushing". But maybe you're referring to some other 'management'. I have a few comments on the lack of forward management on the BOINC project itself... but that's another thread. --- CPDN Visiting Scientist |

New climateprediction.net science website. https://climateprediction.net/ It should have been a better launch but please take a look at the new climateprediction.net website (not the volunteers part), if you haven't already. It's been completely updated to a modern style and the content now better reflects the focus and activities of the Oxford group. Perhaps we can turn this thread to any comments on the new website and I can pass them onto the group. --- CPDN Visiting Scientist |

Perhaps we can turn this thread to any comments on the new website and I can pass them onto the group.I have looked at a few of the pages and really like the pages for those wanting to conduct research. I also like the A level physics page and resources. I have looked at about half of them now. Is this being widely used in schools or do I need to tell all my teacher friends? |

Perhaps we can turn this thread to any comments on the new website and I can pass them onto the group. How does one get from the main web site to these BOINC pages (message board/server status/account page/etc)? I can't find any obvious links for that. |

This has been planned for months and the people who run CPDN have been doing so for a long time. This is absolutely not about management "rushing".While I can't say if https://climateprediction.net had any message about the upcoming changes and can't check since the old pages are now gone, at least on the BOINC side where was no forum messages telling about upcoming outage and no notice in BOINC to tell about upcoming outage. For a "planned for months" multi-day outage, I would expect a BOINC notice and possibly a forum post posted example Monday 09. September that said something along the lines of: "On Friday 13. September 2024 at 14:00 UTC Climateprediction.net will start on a planned outage that is expected to last until Monday 16. September, but can take longer. During the outage you can't report trickles, finished models, ask for more work, access forums or any of the other web-pages. After the outage Climateprediction.net will have changed to CPDN.org and BOINC pages will have switched from www.cpdn.org to main.cpdn.org." Instead, very unexpectedly on Friday 13. September BOINC client failed scheduler requests to Climateprediction.net and trying to open-up any of the pages to see if this is a local or more global problem just had none of the Climateprediction.net or www.cpdn.org pages working at all. Since other web-pages did work, it indicated unexpected Climateprediction.net problems with no idea on why things don't work and no indication time it would be fixed. Things not going as planned during a planned outage isn't the problem, it's the lack of pre-outage warning that is the main problem since this means from users point-of-view this definitely was unexpected outage. |

How does one get from the main web site to these BOINC pages (message board/server status/account page/etc)? I can't find any obvious links for that.Scroll down to the extreme bottom left of the new front page: there are links for 'Log in to your account' and 'Project message boards'. Message boards is working for me now. I can't test Log in, because I'm already logged in to write this reply, and I know it will be rejected. There's a link above the other two, for 'Create a new account'. There was a report yesterday that this was broken: they might have fixed it by now, but again, I can't test, because I've already got an account. |

I expected it to be in one of the pull-down menus at the top. Probably under the Volunteer menu. I seriously doubt most people will be looking at the bottom of a long scroll for those links. IMO, of course. |

IMO, of course.I agree, that would be more intuitive. I also wondered about a couple of the things in the Technical FAQ being brought more to the fore in the section on installing and changing settings but will mull that over a bit and post again if I still feel that way. |

Welllllllll........ The first page is FAR too large, and much of the useful stuff (like the links to the forum) are right down at the bottom, and many folks will have died of boredom before getting there. It's a little better on my mobile, but still not as clear as one would hope. |

I am using BoincTasks which is a BOINC manager that I have used for attaching to all the projects I run, but I just tried using the BOINC manager itself after seeing your reply and was able to attach. Thanks.. |

Thanks, that's helpful. I don't use external managers myself, so it's possible that it needs a tweak to match the new layout. Perhaps somebody could pass a message back to the maintainer? |

Personally, I'm not a fan of some of the modern style website designs, where like one piece of information is shown per screen and one has to scroll down to the next piece and the next. It kind of feels like one is being treated as a child, unable to assimilate multiple pieces of information simultaneously, and needs to be spoon fed one thing at a time. For the amount of scrolling one has to do just to read a few short double-spaced paragraphs, one should be able to read a book page. Too much empty space and generic graphics (it's not an art show) and not enough info are the tendencies of some of these designs. |
