Message 71516 - Posted: 20 Sep 2024, 11:19:07 UTC - in response to Message 71495.

Perhaps we can turn this thread to any comments on the new website and I can pass them onto the group.
I have looked at a few of the pages and really like the pages for those wanting to conduct research. I also like the A level physics page and resources. I have looked at about half of them now. Is this being widely used in schools or do I need to tell all my teacher friends?
Good question. I know CPDN have worked with schools before but I'm not sure about current & future activities. I will find out and report back.

How does one get from the main web site to these BOINC pages (message board/server status/account page/etc)? I can't find any obvious links for that.

The links to these volunteer pages are right at the very bottom on the left. I have already raised this as an issue.

Personally I don't like the 'huge' style either but CPDN are constrained by the CMS & template style in use by the University and it seems to be in vogue.

Message 71519 - Posted: 20 Sep 2024, 14:59:52 UTC - in response to Message 71497.

This has been planned for months and the people who run CPDN have been doing so for a long time. This is absolutely not about management "rushing".
While I can't say if https://climateprediction.net had any message about the upcoming changes and can't check since the old pages are now gone, at least on the BOINC side where was no forum messages telling about upcoming outage and no notice in BOINC to tell about upcoming outage.

For a "planned for months" multi-day outage, I would expect a BOINC notice and possibly a forum post posted example Monday 09. September that said something along the lines of:
"On Friday 13. September 2024 at 14:00 UTC Climateprediction.net will start on a planned outage that is expected to last until Monday 16. September, but can take longer.
During the outage you can't report trickles, finished models, ask for more work, access forums or any of the other web-pages.
After the outage Climateprediction.net will have changed to CPDN.org and BOINC pages will have switched from www.cpdn.org to main.cpdn.org."

Instead, very unexpectedly on Friday 13. September BOINC client failed scheduler requests to Climateprediction.net and trying to open-up any of the pages to see if this is a local or more global problem just had none of the Climateprediction.net or www.cpdn.org pages working at all. Since other web-pages did work, it indicated unexpected Climateprediction.net problems with no idea on why things don't work and no indication time it would be fixed.

Things not going as planned during a planned outage isn't the problem, it's the lack of pre-outage warning that is the main problem since this means from users point-of-view this definitely was unexpected outage.

Very well said.
And the title of this thread is wrong, it's not about the change of a website but a collapse of the project.
If the project management don't understand how the platform they are using, boinc, works, then what's the point?

Hardly. CPDN is one of the longest running BOINC projects and is unlikely to fold any time soon. With respect to the thread title, it was given before the extent of the the issues was known. CPDN has survived major infrastructure changes in the past, some of their own making and some imposed on them. The problems this time only lasted a few days so I totally reject the idea that there has been a total colapse of the project.

Respectfully, those links at the bottom do NOT equate to what used to be on the main page. After the recent debacle I decided to look at my boinc tonight to see if I had any tasks running now that I'm back to the original "climateprediction.net". No, I do not. So, I went to the home page to try to find the server status to see if there are any new tasks to be sent out to make sure it's not something on my end still screwed up. Well, guess what? That information seems to be unavailable now.

IMO The new website is typical of the day - fluff in big pictures and fancy animations.

edit: For anyone looking for server status: "volunteer your computer" (at the top, which is different than the link of the same name above the first picture - go figure!) -> (scroll way down to) "technical FAQs" -> "5.5 I’m running BOINC, but I’m not getting any tasks" -> "Server Status".
If you use the "volunteer..." link above the first picture then you next have to next click "volunteering your computer" within that picture area (mind blown) at which point you can use the above path.

Actually, there's a much quicker way.

Go to 'Message boards' as discussed here (I agree, that should be more directly accessible from higher up the page). There's a navigation bar at the top, just below the main logo. The pages you want - including server status - are accessible from the 'Computing' drop-down link. You can see it while reading this, too.

Oh no, I was following the forum on boinc and it was directly clear that this was a major problem not a website change.

It was a major problem due to website changes. Meaning, if where was no website changes, specifically to URL's, where wouldn't have been any problems at all.

In round about 50 hours my last WU will finish and upload.

How far has the transition of the BOINC-Project-Pages gone? Is it safe to detach and reattach already or will the next try of changing the Master-URL still come and we / I should better wait with this step.

I am not going to change anything till I hear from Glenn or Andy. Doubtless Glenn will post here or if from Andy whoever gets there first from the moderators and Glenn will post.

If you are attached to climateprediction.net there is no need to detach/attach. Everything from the boinc point of view is working fine. Am bit confused about the question. You can detach & re-attach any time you want but if you have running tasks they will be aborted. If you got attached to 'cpdn.org' during the attempted renaming, then yes, you will need to reattach again to climateprediction.net. Apologies if I've missed posts below, this thread has got busier than I can keep up with.

Noted, thanks for pointing that out. I will bring it up in Monday's meeting. The website needs to work for everyone and feedback on what needs to change is useful.
