I have Windows 2000 and have just transferred from classic to Boinc, which is up and running. 1 Am I right in thinking that if I just turn the box off, then when I reboot, the model may start at 0% again? 2 And that to avoid losing work, I have to suspend the model before turning off? 3 If this is indeed the case, what will happen if the system crashes eg in a thunderstorm? Thanks, Mo |

Hi Mo, The safest thing is to suspend and then exit BOINC. But you will most likely be okay if there is an unexpected power failure/reboot. I had one beta model that had problems after a power failure, but I've rebooted a few while still processing lately and it's come out okay. No guarantees of course... George |

Thanks for that, geophi. Your answer means that I can safely go away for the weekend. |

That isn't the experience I've just had sadly. I had to physically reboot after a Windows app locked everything up, and afterwards CPDN has kindly rewound my model to timestep 0. Quite annoying as I was on the 3rd phase after 500 hours. This was running version 4.05, so I'm not sure if the particular problem has cleared up since then, but I think stability is still the most sorely lacking feature with BOINC and large work units such as CPDN > It should only rewind to the last checkpoint which occur every 144 timesteps > or 3 model days. Magically these occur at midnight of day 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, > 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30 of every month. |

Sorry to hear that :( Personally I'd advise upgrading to version 4.13 which is much better at recovering from problems like this. "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer |
